Sick, and identity theft

Well, the first part of this post is to say that I'm sick. It's damn hard to focus, I'm not very alert, and I've got very little energy for anything... so yeah, I'm just run of the mill flu-ish.

That being said, I have a NEW stress I have to worry about that's entirely my fault.

Despite being a former tech support, I fell for the oldest trick in the book and fell for an email phishing scheme. I compromised one of our Social Security Numbers.

We've done all the steps necessary to try and protect ourselves, and one thing we have on our side is the fact that I realized my mistake only minutes after I made it AND made the necessary changes to passwords... It's not like anyone who purchases our information on the Dark Web will be free to do whatever they want with it for months without us knowing anything is wrong, and we -are- being protected by a credit monitoring/id theft protection service through our bank, thankfully.

Be careful out there people. These phishing emails are looking more and more professional and legitimate. Granted, I'm still sick and still not very with it but still, even if I was clear headed I might have made this mistake.
If a website requires you to 'verify' anything, the minute it asks for a SSN or a CCV number, back out immediately. If there's REALLY a problem they'll call you or you can call THEM. I know most of you are pretty web savvy already, but I let my guard down, and whatever happens because of my mistake, it's my fault entirely.
Don't be like me. Keep your guard up. The internet is a lawless place.

That may be true, but no matter how professional a phishing email looks, there is always some tell-tale sign that reveals the illegitimacy of the message. As an example, if you look closely at the urls linked in phishing emails, they NEVER lead to actual official sites or pages.

It's sad that there are so many that think stealing is better than earning it the right way. Hope things get better for you and get well soon Kino.
