Those parts of "no internet" and "not being allowed to leave the country" sounds with the overtones of North Korea.
Not being allowed to leave a country has always been a hallmark of a communist country...In the former USSR, anyone who tried to leave was criminally charged as being a "defector".

I have heard it said that a government of a counrty is most dangerous when a country is about to collapse. That is because leaders fear what will happen to them when they loose their power. As a result, there is no limit to how ruthless a government in that scinario will become in order to hold onto that power.
It looks like what is going on is an age old scinario throughout the pages of history...The leaders of Venezuela are in fear of being overthrown, and will commit every human rights violation they can in order to stay in power to save their own asses.
...As long as corrupt leaders can manage to stay in power, they feel they are invinsible from being made to pay for their crimes against the people.

It is said when a new country is established (ie. a territory gaining independence from an existing country), that is also when a government is most dangerous. That is because a government of a new country goes to great extents to establish their role of power and leadership before another faction grabs it first and fills the power vacume...That scinario is what is going on in Libya today since Omar Kadafi was taken out.

The only hope in a situation like that is a forceful revolution against the government. Of course it won't have a chance if most of the population sits back and says, "I don't want to get involved in anything like that".

If a revolution can put a tyrant in power like what happened in Cuba in 1959, a revolution can also take a tyrant out of power as well.
