My World Monday ~ Strengths and Weaknesses

by
Shunamir may have similar looking systems to earth mammals,  but their physical strengths and weaknesses might be different than they first appear to some.

Physical Differences of Shunamir.

While Shunamir share the same basic extremities and sense organs as other sapient species, they have differing levels of effectiveness.

5 Basic Senses

Taste ~
Functions [Page 2] by Kiffin
+2
Shunamir tongue are flatter and a bit wider than their mouth, remaining rolled up most of the time until talking or licking.  Their sense of taste is fairly good.  The tongue of a shuna has taste receptors on both the top and underside.  Like their sense of smell their taste seems keyed especially to tastes that the Shunamir body make.

Sight ~
Functions by Kiffin
+2
Shunamir see in the more common visible light range of most species.  They also see reflected UV into around the 200 Nanometer range.  This gives them perception beyond the bounds of common visible light.  Their vision if simulated to other races might have a bit more of a glow on some edges and over some materials that reflect UV.  This has lead practically to some starship windows seem a bit less transparent than meant to.  This effect can be counteracted and has been for shuna glass.  Their sight has also lead to some inconspicuous marking of secret or unscrupulous locations.

Touch ~ Shunamir hand and foot paws are covered with fur, the hand paws fur is fine and allows for more sensitive feeling of movement direction across the palms and soles of their paws.  Their senses of temperature are more dull than some other races especially when it comes to quick changes.  Shunamir hands are fully opposable however their digits are shorter with the addition of retractable claws.  Shunamir hind paws claws are non retractable.  The most sensitive touch on the shunamir body is on the ear tips, the fur and sensitive skin originally evolving for picking up sound, now used for sensitive touch and more delicate manipulation of objects.

Smell ~ The shunamir sense of smell can be considered fairly common. They have the ability to smell scents around though not much into the far distance.  Some bodily scents are picked up as stronger by their noses still having some instinct related functions to the shunamir body.  Though rare this has caused some confusion when out and about in galactic society.

Hearing ~
It may not seem like it by looking at them, but hearing is the weakest of the Shunamir senses.  Their big ears are deceptive and in reality make it a bit tougher to hear past the fur and fluff.  Their hearing does excel in one area, underwater.  The vibration through the water is picked up by all of a shuna's ear, underwater a shuna can hear for long distances and hear tones that they normally can't pick up.

Movement and Muscular

Shunamir speed varies, when on all fours in their more feral gait they can run very quickly.  Sometimes up to 64 KPH.  However when on just two legs they are significantly slowed.  Running on two legs is impossible for all but the most trained.  Most of their business is conducted on two legs, even walking from place to place for smaller distances can be common.  For long distances however four legged travel is necessary.

Jumping for the average Shunamir is commonplace.  Used to get around the warrens as much as legwork and running.  Though those whose steps have slowed will often go around small obstacles many shuna late to work or in a hurry will head over and through even medium obstacles.  From a standing position most shunamir would be able to jump 2.5 to 3 times their body length, an average of 3 meters.

Climbing is one area many shunamir find difficult.  Due to the weight of their ears and the general muscular nature of their body.  Climbing straight up a steep incline would be impossible for most shunamir though some who are trained and have shorter ears would find the task merely difficult but not impossible.

Shunamir swimming is very streamlined.  They evolved from water dwelling mammals, their wide ear like appendages give them excellent turning under water, combined with a flexible spine and tail they can swim and dive fairly quickly.  Well trained shunamir have excellent breath control, however the average shunamir must come up for air regularly.  Though nowhere near as fast or deep diving as their ancestors they still maintain some of these strengths.

Gravity on Hush is heavier than that of earth.  This is one reason for Shunamirs size and Feral gait.  Many other creatures are similarly affected by the heavy Hush Gravity.  Their heavy gravity has given them a lifting and punching strength that can match creatures larger than their size.  Their leg strength is the strongest of their extremities

since the gravity is heavier on Hush then on earth would it affect a shuna much if they were put into a lower gravity planet?
also would they run at the same speed on a low gravity planet like earth then a high gravity planet such as their home world?

can shunas also breathe underwater or are they more mammal like needing to come up for air? if so how long can they hold their breath?

also are there any Shuna that can be exiled from all clans and not be allowed into cities? if so how would they survive?

aside from that theres another question id need to ask and its probly the most serious one, if a shuna egg were to be taken off the planet by an alien race (lets just say it happened even if there was good security) and raised by that alien species then the shuna were to escape and find their way back to Hush how would they be treated? would they be helped to understand the Shuna language?

now the biggest question, if a shuna was raised on a different planet such as earth with low gravity, would it affect the shuna badly making him weaker then a Shuna that was raised on Hush and would their senses and strength be any different?

It would be like humans taking weights off.  They would be a little stronger but not supermen.   Their punching and such would be unchanged.  This strength would wear off over time.  Shuna ships adjust for this so as not to encourage atrophied.  This would mostly affect jumping and lifting...  Their running would be mostly unchanged though they could do it a bit longer.

" can shunas also breathe underwater or are they more mammal like needing to come up for air? if so how long can they hold their breath?

They can not breath under water.  They evolved from otter like creatures.

Most shuna that get to the point of exile would be dealt with by "reconditioning" though most are never seen from again.  In modern day...  2947 There are some camps of shuna who have voluntarily left society,  These camps must keep moving though as they are actively hunted by the champions with the assistance of other clans.

Any shuna returning back to the planet no matter the reason would be treated with scrutiny.  On average they would be treated as an outsider and not be let past the city of Kadinger.  (the only publicly accessible city)  Society as a general rule is very dedicated to helping those in the warrens and resources to help outsiders are not official dedicated.

They would most likely be thinner and becoming use to the gravity on Hush would be somthing they would need to work at.  That said Humans regularly make trips to the planet.  It is not recommended for the elderly or sickly visit Hush.

what do you mean they are actively hunted by the champions with the assistance of other clans? do you mean they are hunted to be killed? also how strong are the "champions" and how well trained are they?

if a pod crashed onto the planet and inside was a injured shuna or another race what would the Shuna's do? would they help them to get better and heal the wounds or would they leave them to die?

(im trying to get a more better understanding of how Shuna's deal with things, as Bright and Aura's story needs to be more accurate to your planets customs and whatnot.)

The Champions clan.  The hunters and police force of the Warrens.  Deviation is not tolerated.  If they can be captured they will be given to the Luminary for "Retraining"  Though many chose to fight to the death.

Interesting question... That's a tough unlikely hypothetical ...  IF it landed in some area that was in the range of a Luminary they would most likely capture the pod bring the occupant back to the luminary and question them while healing them.  If the occupant was let's say someone who was involved in a crime they would most likely be questioned for their information and then disposed of.  If for some off the wall reason they had no memory or were believed to have left the planet for honorable reasons... (IE: as part of a political onvoy)  Then they would be re integrated into society.  If they did not know the language at all it would be a desition that could go either way as a policy on that is not set in stone.  Most Mudi are bi lingual in present day and they could interrogate in their native tongue.  Outside influences are Very closely monitored and even a loyal outsider could be a risk to a happy warren.  If they landed in the jungles or tundra of the planet... the cold and storms would most likely kill them before a search party could get to them.. Though one would be sent out eventually to collect the technology.

What if the thing in the pod was not a shunamir but a different species?

If they managed to get to the pod in time they would rescue the alien and return them to their government.  If IF it was some never seen before alien (which is like what a .000000000000000000001% chance) they would probably probe it for info.
