Assistance needed! SAI

by
Hey everyone!

I have a HUUUUGE favor to ask!

Now, I know there are TONS of tutorials out there. I'd like to ask the community, as far as SAI, which tutorials do you think are most helpful, you think are better? As far as tricks and tips, brushes etc?

Thank you so much if anyone out there could help me! <3 <3

Personally I find trial and error the best, because everyone is different when it comes to drawing.

Like the above comment, trial and error is the best option. Tutorials can help, but sometimes they just makes things more complicated, and of course there are so many options that following "instructions" or whatever just makes your work a bit unoriginal. You have to find your niche on how to use the program. I'd also recommend watching streams of people using it, that can help you familiarize the layout and such. Also, memorizing some basic keyboard shortcuts is very important, there's so many buttons and options that not having to move your mouse all over drastically reduces the time, especially when a drawing takes like 2 hours minimum like it does for me.

Thirding the "trial and error" comment. Tutorials for pretty much any drawing software is always such a personal thing that you're not gauranteed to find tutorials that you can personally vibe with. I really like that way that ArvonGile dude put it- "You have to find your niche on how to use the program."

This goes for settings, configuration, canvases and all that. If you're trying to get a process for digital art, and you legitimately don't want to fly in blind, I'd say do a few pictures on your own, maybe to play around, then look up speedpaints, not tutorials. You'll get a better sense of how to layer and color more effectively and creatively, using the tools to your advantage than you ever would from a tutorial.

Maybe go to some art streams, maybe join in on a group, and ask for advice from artists you like that use it

Umm I like the onta brush pack. It's been floating around for a while. The pencils are great for sketching. I especially like the pencil poju for sketching. It's also fun to ink with as it has this scratchy texture.

I don't really play a lot with the settings I play around with multiply and density a lot when I'm trying to sketch. I typically just focus on using the pen toolike and altering it as It suits me.

I can't find the specific tutorial, but there was a really good greyscale tutorial where they just used the hotkey x to switch between white and black rapidly and block down colors, then used the water brush for tactical blending. I'll link it if I stumble on it again.

Not sure if your still looking for tutorials etc but I got some GREAT value out of a comic coloring channel over at https://www.youtube.com/user/kmrussell24/playlists Theres also some more indepth looks at figuring out shape & form for your lighting at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpXBza5p_YJTauaX... with some more stuff by the same channel on color at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLV2X3tgajVlFROS5...

Hope those are as helpful to you as they have been for me in improving my work.

btw the MAJORITY of those tutorials use Photoshop etc but most of the principles etc can be translated to any program including SAI.

I think trial and error is good, but what i reccomend is try working with SAI, and search for a specific tutorial on what you want to do, for example, how to use layers, how to use rulers, how to lock opacity and such.
