Besides, thinking about it: Why aren't there actual three sided dice?? Impossible by the means of geometry? Maybe - in theory. But practical? Take a cylinder, grind it the long way to give the slice plane a triangular shape. Then 'rounden' the ends, so it has to tip over onto one of the three surfaces should it actually land on the stump while being thrown - tadaa!
I've seen such 'barrel-dice' with pointy ends as D10 or D20, so you rather roll them across the table until they would come to rest. But why not as D3?? As far as I know, a few games even require D3 - Warhammer for example. They suggest taking a D6 like you explained above. But .. a real D3 would be sexy to have!
