Artistic Pet Peeves

Dear little ponies. Tell me about the things that piss you off. Consider it a joyous exorcism of all that is not right with the world, be it regarding commissions or con artists or those tiny erasers on gigantic hb pencils that expire two weeks in, approximately 39 years before the pencil itself runs out.

I will use all of this remarkable input on my horsecast NHB tonight (http://nohoovesbarred.net). That's a bit short notice, perhaps, but we can always use more artsy rambling. RAMBLE AWAY. I'm counting on rambling rumbling!

Also, tell me if Cloud Chaser has a nice mane or not. Consider this a bonus question if you want.

edit : Now that it's recorded, you can catch this episode in all its longwinded glory at the website above or find it directly over at https://soundcloud.com/nohoovesbarred/ep-160-cloud-chas...

I hate it when people comment that so-and-so artwork reminds them of some other artist or artwork. I wanna be known for myself, dammit

also cloudchaser certainly does have a nice mane

I should probably be more surprised that you get this than I am. That just underscores how common it is, and I think it's often rude too. It's kind of a blind spot for a lot of people, I suppose. *Goes back to combing pony hair.*

hmm I never thought it would be taken like that I will have to avoid saying that from now on.

really really really really really really really really tiny resolutions where you can't see the detail and work that went into the otherwise impressive art.

It's been a while since I've seen any of that. The closest thing that comes to mind is this 'watermark' like way of not-really posting art like it's a preview of sorts. Even that's pretty rare! Hmmm!

Hmmm...
Tbh, I don´t like when people compare their art to concept/promo art (e.g.: Blizzard´s), and so they feel worthless as an artist.
Or when my 1024pl Intuos doesn´t lets me draw lineart as detailed as I´d like (without heavy editing). I wish they didn´t were up to ten times as expensive in my country than on Amazon (which we cannot buy from).
Also the lack of art courses/schools in my city. I find difficult to improve by myself.

Talking about the tablet prices there? Cause I can relate. It's amazing what physical stores can charge for a relatively casual art tool.

I paid $450 for an Intuos Art small... I could have bought a Pro for that amount.

Entitled mode: I dislike it when artists get so paranoid of their work spreading that they only post below SD images with a massive watermark blurring most of the image.

Yeah, understand that one. It's oftentimes understandable too, which is kind of sad. I can't 'get into' a watermarked picture.

hopefully, you announce your horsecasts from now on.

artistic pet peeves are mainly about getting shapes right or using specific color techs, like shading or various colors.  I like unusual colors.  Also, Cloud Chaser looks nice.  Rumble is lucky to have her as a foalsitter

It's pretty much every week, so that'd be a lot of announcements! But if you miss them live they'll still be on the website so really there's no pressure. :D

I've not got many, only a few small things. Bigger ones are like using a strait black to shade and using ONLY that color for shading. There's a time and place for black if you're shading with it, imo, but not always. This mostly only applies to digital art, though, but could be even worse in traditional art depending on how you do it.

I do also find it very rude when a user, who may ask for critique, will respond sharply to any good/constructive criticism. It doesn't happen often but every once in a while. My """favorite""" response to a critique is that it's just "my own art style" when it's clearly not about that and they asked for help/input in the first place.  xx

I believe many people asking for critique just want you to look at the picture and tell them they're awesome. :D

I do think that's a true thing, time to time.

I think part of growing and being an artist is accepting critique. Even if non-artists can offer very valuable critique. I hate to see people that "Don't contribute" put down prematurely BECAUSE they don't create. When I went to college most of the people in my art classes weren't art majors like I was. There were a few biologists, medical students, handy-man kinda type, etc. Some of them gave the BEST damn critique because they could see things differently than artists did.

Now, if they artist doesn't want it or may want it PRIVATELY then they don't have to put up with it but should at least maturely handle themselves about it. (I've seen some real rude comebacks to unneeded/unwanted critique.)

Giving and taking critique; knowing what to critique and how to do it... well, I do think there's room for improvement in everyone. Anyone who thinks otherwise often remains unaware of their own shortcomings.

At the same time, it's a sensitive and fragile world out there and we don't all have the draconic superskin necessary to not take things personal. I do appreciate the quality of not being an asshole whenever I come across it. :D

Of course. There's a time and place for everything, critique being one of those things especially.

And that does add to the issue, I think, online. In person critique is A LOT easier to handle...Online we don't know sarcasm from seriousness in text so offering critique can make someone look like an ass, even if that's not what thy're doing...But wording is everything and if you can say something in a way that makes you look not-like-an-ass it's great. :D

Yeah, I guess it's something people need to learn to strategize. Both giving and taking. In the flesh people don't usually take the time to make half-hearted troll-critiques - unless they're in school. Actually, I might take all that back. It's probably not much less common, but I agree with you that it's a hell of a lot easier to differentiate from actual critique.

Very true! And I'm sure outside of art school/classes critique is very different, especially if gotten from general public. But sometimes that's very helpful when someone who doesn't really "do" art can help figure out problems somewhere ^^

Probably too late for it now... but an artist posting a thumbnail pic with a link that sends you to another site with tons of pictures and you have to figure out what picture it is guessing the thumbnail only to not be able to find it and the pictures aren't sorted in order of date but in some other wierd sorting format.

Did not know you had a podcast thingie.

Yeah, I appreciate it. Thanks to reading these comments we didn't have to ramble endlessly. :D (For the most part, anyway...)
