Yay for statistics - most popular species

Wikifur has a nice summary of characters sorted by species. And I used this data to have a little look what are the most favorite species ;3

For the following evaluation I have neglected Hybrids, Aliens, Monsters, any artificial races (like Lombax, Chakat, Sergal,) but included mythological races like centaurs, satyrs, unicorns, dragons etc.

The Big Three:
1) Canid Characters:
Wolves, Dogs and Foxes (and their subspecies) make up about 1/3rd of the whole population

2) Feline Characters:
House Cat, Tiger, Lions, etc... are close behind with 1/5th.

3) Dragons:
Dragons alone contribute around 6% to the whole (no dragon hybrids were counted cause those are a lot as well.

Individual Species:
And here are the broken down top 10.
1) Wolves (~13%)
2) Foxes (~7%)
3) Dragons (~6%)
4) House Cat (~5%)
5) Tiger (~4%)
6) Lion (~4%)
7) Dog (generic) (~3%)
8) Husky (~3%)
9) Rabbit (~3%)
10) Racoon (~3%)

Disclaimer: These values are strongly rounded and are a rough estimation at best, even though it contains around 5700 characters. This is since there are some inconsistencies. For example, the list contained some non-original characters (like Minerva Mink) which has affected the numbers a little bit. Also I can't claim the numbers to be all correct (since nobody was double checking my work).
And lastly I can't say if the entries in Wikifur are a representative sample throughout the whole fandom (since mostly rather well known characters are in there or characters that just happened to have friends active on the site or were entered by the owners themselves.)

Nevertheless the biggest numbers should be pretty close to the truth.

What can we learn from that? If you want a character that is somewhat unique avoid the following species:
Any Canid species (Wolf, Fox, generic Dog and Husky in particular)
Any Feline species (Cat, Lion and Tiger in particular)
Any Dragon (including hybrids)

And also those:
Rabbit
Raccoon
Otter
Skunk
Horse
Bear
Kangaroo
Coyote
Cheetah
Hyena
Squirrel
Rat
Mouse
Ferret
Leopard
Snow Leopard
Gryphon
Werewolf
German Sheperd
Cougar
Deer
Arctic Wolf
Lynx
Badger
Border Collie
Dingo
Jackal
Jaguar

Come on folks, ponies represent!

MLP fan characters aren't also in this ^^

Just like Pokemon and Digimon characters aren't :3

T'was speaking more of horses in general, and not MLP "Bronies".  Just looking out for my kin.
=p

I added Ponies to Horses. I didn't think there was that much difference.
KhellSennet
6 years, 11 months ago
Again, think we're miscommunicating.

T'was just sad that Horses (any variety) didn't make the top-10, let alone top-3.  Need more horses, we do.
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
Ah yes. More horses with big, long ... hehe ^^

Faces...  We'll go with faces.

Yes. Long faces. ^^

Which implies long tongues... :P

I picked a racoon at first then made him into a skunk as I didn't see very many back then, I also made him redish brown and gave his face different to be his own.

Sabrina, ZigZag and the skunk trio of Hardiman might be responsible for the popularity of skunks ^^

I like skunks because of their full fluffy tails, their nice rounded rumps and the fact that most other creatures won't harm them. Besides the stink, they do have very sharp teeth and long claws to protect themselfs too. We can be quite the lovers too. hehehe
SenGrisane

I love fluffy tails too ;3

Yay for Thylacines! Because we are rare and strange treats~
SenGrisane

Not as rare as you might think. They are still in the average field ;3

I didn't see octopus on the list :-P
SenGrisane

Yes. I only had 1 octopus I think.

Aw, hugs you can probe my rump anytime you like, hehe

interesting facts. though I didn't choose my species for it to be unique or specially recognizable, that weren't my thoughts, but for it represents me the most and I feel some kind of affection to it =3

I didn't mean you have to listen to this. It just shows what animals are the most popular.
Seems quite logically, that the most common pets (Cats and Dogs) would spawn the most fans (who then spread out to the wild versions) since so many have "hands on" experiences with them and learn their habits and characters.
After all each pet you own will appear to have human characteristics (what a little thief, sour puss, etc...) and as such the jump to make a furry character (which is an animal with human characteristics) is very easy.

*nods* quite right, sounds veri logical indeed ^^

Chipmunks...
They do not exist in large numbers lol
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
I was surprised by this too. Expected many Alvin & Chipmunks and Rescue Rangers fan characters.
AlexReynard

I'm honestly surprised wolves outnumber foxes, and dragons too! Ad that mice didn't make the top ten. I thought there were lotsa mousies.

I still find it interesting that I chose a fox for myself before I was ever really aware of the vastness of the furry fandom. It just seemed obvious to me, and always has. You're still the only badonkadonk I know though. ;)

Wolves are super popular. Also Wolf-hybrids (especially Fox-Wolf (Folf)  and Husky-Wolf (Wolsky). Even the tripple hybrid Wolf-Fox-Husky (Folfsky) would have probably made it into the list if hybrids had been included)

What I am surprised about though is the many comments I got on this journal ^^.

Donkeys certainly aren't the rarest I found. There are a few I know. And they belong into the horse group which is popular.

>and Husky-Wolf (Wolsky)

That sounds super-Russian.

>What I am surprised about though is the many comments I got on this journal ^^.

Furries like talking about furries.

Trying to think of rare fursonas. Gotta mention Uncle Kage. Also, I've seen a centipede. And Agouti-Rex's character is a bilby.
SenGrisane

Yes insects are rather rare. :3
shadycat

Surprised bears aren't more popular. *shrugs* Common or not, the shadycat has always worked for me.
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
Well, bears are on the list and pretty high on top (it is in order of popularity), so they are still pretty popular.

Whatever works is okay. This is not a guideline what characters to choose. Just an analysis.

Whoops! Didn't see them there the first time. Still, the overall diversity is interesting. If my math is right, the top ten favorites still only comprise 52% of the total. Lot of variety out there.
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
It spreads out pretty quickly. After the big three you quickly have dozens and dozens of animals that are equally popular.
DraculJOSHI
6 years, 11 months ago
LOL, I have a dragon and I don't think any other person has one like me.

I still say, it's a matter of creativity.
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
I am sorry, but I had to think of this :D
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OurDragonsA...

Dragons just feel to me like Nightelf Rogues in the early days of WoW, or Drizzt Clones. Especially now that I am finished with Skyrim where dragons are degraded to "speedbump".
Catwheezle
6 years, 11 months ago
You're finished with Slyrim? Gosh, you must have a very different play style to mine. 150+ hours in, I still feel I have barely started.
SenGrisane
6 years, 10 months ago
I didn't do every last quest, but when most people just drop after 1 hit (and stronger ones after 2-3) even though I made a defensive Sword and Board character it became kinda boring. I just rushed through the dungeons, ignoring traps and whatnot grabbed the prize and that's it. And that became repetitive quickly.

I tried playing a mage, but found it to be the opposite. Magic didn't even do slightly comparable damage and it took forever to kill a single strong enemy.

not much sea critters there too like orcas or sharks. I didn't see much from the bovine family. Or subspecies of monkeys... or true avians.
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
Orcas, Dolphins and Sharks are pretty much the only sea critters I found. I think 1 Manatee was in the list too.

Monkey's are rare as well (only Lemurs are somewhat popular). But I guess they are too close to humans to be attractive as characters.

Avians in general are rarely seen as well. I suspect it is the beak, which makes it hard to show expressions in a drawing.
Eiko
6 years, 11 months ago
Who are you calling "generic"? ;p~
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
With generic dog I mean any dog species that is not categorizeable into subspecies like Corgy, Husky etc.
KhellSennet
6 years, 11 months ago
KUVAS!

Actually, I doubt there are many or any Kuvas furs.  Most people have never seen such a dog, and those that do, rarely live to tell the tale. =p
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
I have not even heard the name ^^
But it looks like my first family dog. Just a bit whiter.
KhellSennet
6 years, 11 months ago
Well, I can tell you a couple things about that breed...
1 - They're HEAVY, and they like to climb up on people because they always think they're still the tiny puppy they started out as.
2 - They drool.  Buckets, literally buckets.
3 - They love being white...
SenGrisane

1) I had a Bernese Mountain Dog mix that thought that same way ^^
Sounds fun in any case :P
Zarphus
6 years, 11 months ago
no love for the buurds. :<
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
Yes birds are not that common ^^
KhellSennet
6 years, 11 months ago
It's because of the wings.  A mammal's a mammal, but when you get into something like birds, snakes, whales etc, you have to start deciding for yourself whether to keep the wings/fins/tails, or give them hands/legs/etc.  And there's no consensus between furs as to which is right, so arguments ensue.
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
Wings are always hard :D
WesleyFoxx
6 years, 11 months ago
See, personally, I don't care about being "original" just for the sake of being original; I prefer to simply be true to myself. I am a fox! I don't care if there are many others! Its me :3
SenGrisane
6 years, 11 months ago
That is good ^^
It also means many like your species ;3
