Alright, I just had this flash thought while talking to a friend in a chat (way back in January). She doesn’t see why furies are so drawn to sex or have such a close association with it. Aside from the common stereotypes that sex and gayness is all furies think about I’ve come up with a more rational answer (since there does seem to be a lot of sexual references or general freedom of nudity surrounding furies). I’m thinking that furies are so synonymous with sex because of the concept proposed by philosophers in the 19th or 18th century (I forget which ones) that states something along the lines of, “if humans were to give into their animalistic instincts they would be prone to self satisfaction and pleasure.” This statement is not only referring to a narcissistic lifestyle that would no doubt involve sex and sexual actions. It seems to me that in modern western society, the idea of having laws and morality to insure that humans do not revert to animalistic behavior is a prominent mentality. But this is also, perhaps, a fallacious way of thinking. None the less, if this is the mentality towards animals then it seems reasonable to think it is also why furies are associated with sexuality.
