Criticism: How Giving it Makes me Feel Bad

The people I watch are all talented artists, while I am just someone who enjoys the work and produce none of my own. And that's why as of late, I don't say anything much when it comes to critiquing.

For example, an  artist has a very unique and creative style, but the style, in my opinion, does not translate very well on mainstream/well known commercial entertainment characters. I could point this out, but I refrain.

Since I make noting, I feel that even though I could say something, it doesn't seem proper to express my critique.

Additionally, when I look at the responses to submissions, lots of people fawn over the fact that it was made by the artist. It's all good to appreciate an artist, but I haven't seen anyone say anything about things that seem off.

And some artists get really offended when you even point out a flaw... I had to stop watching a few in FA because those artists got a bit belligerent.

But lastly, I get this feeling that unless you say how hot or cute something is, your comment is not appreciated. Well, unless you got some inside joke in regards to produce. I'd wager cabbages and durians might not be a good idea though...

While I do like the "if you can't say anything nice..." thing, I also believe that without critique, there is no growth.
