List of influential anime

Today I bring you a list of 20 anime which strongly influenced me as a person or as an artist.
This is not a list of 20 best anime I've seen, nothing like that. Nor is the list all-inclusive, I may be missing some here.
Nonetheless:
20 anime which had the most influence on me (the list is loosely chronological).

Sailor Moon
Digimon (Advanture 1, Advanture 2, Tamers)
FLCL
Serial Experiments Lain
.hack//SIGN
Haibane Renmei
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Noir
Now and Then, Here and There
SaiKano
Utawarerumono
Pita Ten
Read or Die (OAV)
Whisper of the Heart
Windy Tales
Zettai Shonen
Sonic X
Brigadoon - Marin and Melan
Higurashi no naku koro ni
Magical girl lyrical Nanoha

What about you, do you know any of them? Are there any anime which were an influence on your art or on you as a person?

PS: I don't watch dubs, everything I watch is original audio - either raw or subs

I know, I watched that too. Although that's not the end yet, from what I remember it has a pretty nasty "to be continued" at the end ; p
Annoying XD Also novels are supposed to go much further or something.

For me, Sailor Moon and Digimon were TV staples growing up, and you can replace Nausicaa with "The entire Miyazaki catalog" (Except Grave of the Fireflies).  Noir was a very unique series I was lucky enough to borrow from a coworker once - would buy it myself if they weren't still asking in excess of $250 for it.  And SaiKano is one I've always wanted to buy, but again it is grossly overpriced where I live, and rarely in-stock.  I've heard of Lain, Sonic X, and .hack, but never seen.  The rest you list, never even heard-of, which is not surprising as anime is still hard to come by in my corner of Canada, as well as immensely expensive, and usually inundated with volume after volume of utter crap.

For me, anime began with AstroBoy, followed by heavy doses of Samurai Pizza Cats and the aforementioned Sailor Moon (whence developed my Hentai interest).  I tried to get into Card Captors and Dragonball / Z, but the scheduled showtimes never worked out.  Slayers (or technically The Slayers) was my staple anime, with Neon Genesis and Maze as backups.  For films, it was Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, Galaxy Express 999, Ninja Scroll, Macross Plus, Armitage, and the first two Patlabor films.  Classics, and the few anime I was able to rent on VHS as a kid, or ones that continually played on late-night TV.

I'm so glad someone other than me knows about Brigadoon! :D

With the amount of cliche this anime breaks, and the excellently played serious overtones, it had to happen.

I just wish the main girl's voice wasn't so annoying, but I got over that and liked it.

One of my first and most influential. Lain is my god. Director of Lain also directed Digimon Tamers, it's quite fascinating how many similarities there are between those two.

>Sonic X

Oh dear god, I'd never have guessed you actually liked that, your art is much better than the usual obnoxious fanboys of that show. I guess that's why drawing Sonic fan characters doesn't bother you as well.

Kind of surprised to see FLCL as well.

Try the Miyazaki films, good animation, strong plot.

Actually I included a Miyazaki film, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
The other Miyazaki films were nice but didn't have as much influence on me. But Nausicaa had a definite and rather strong influence.

FLCL is one of the best shows I've ever seen, impressed me immensely.

I'm not a fan of fan characters in general, fanart is one thing (and even fanart is something I draw very rarely), fan characters is another. Personally i think you should almost always go for original, making fan characters or recolorations or whatever, feels very unimmaginative. And I'm not a fanboy of anything :<
Why sonic x felt influential you may ask? There is friendship and some sweet moments which were rather touching I guess. Also the main character (the boy) was easy to connect with for me in some mental ways. But it's one of the less influential anime in my list. It's not a bad show, Eggman is an excellent villain, one of my favorite villains (at least how he is in sonic x)

Finding out you liked Sonic X made my respect for plummet 200%, your reply to this made it skyrocket by 500%. (Yeah I'm shallow, so :P)

THANK YOU, finally a Sonic X fan that isn't a fucking retard that endorses OCDNSs with two tails and the last name Prower or a recolor of Sonic as red, you have no idea how overjoyed I am that there is at least one furry that likes that show that actually shares my opinion on this subject, usually they'd just whine about how their fan character is so connected to them (even though it's not theirs) and tell me I don't appreciate their creativity, although I have to concede some of  them have probably matured since 2008/9...

About touching moments though... You've probably had someone point this out before but none of the characters acted in-character at all, none of them underwent any significant character development, and they sometimes contradicted what they said in the actual games, and a lot of people, myself included, hate Cosmo for basically being a plot device to ruin Tails' character even farther than it already was. (Someone should tell the writer that 8 year old kids are too young to experience those emotions, really, he didn't act his age in the entire series.) and nobody but Chris had any wholesome personality, that's not how some people expected a cartoon based on the games to go.

I had no expectancy how the characters should act, because I never really played any sonic games. Well, I played one on snes but there wasn't really any dialogs there and I didn't finish it. So it's not like the cartoon could ruin them for me.
I played a bit of the Sonic Colours after I watched the cartoon, but I found the game a bit too hard and I think I also didn't finish it.
I also had no chance to see any other of the sonic universe cartoons.
Although from what I know the characters change a bit depending on the game. And there is a wide variety in the plot/style.

There is, but probably the most well-written plot is in the comics after Flynn took over, he did some things right, like fleshing out each character instead of making them props like a lot of other media does. Not just in relation to the canon but in general; the kids act like kids, the teenagers act like teenagers, the good and bad moments don't feel watered-down with sillyness, it took itself seriously when it needed to, and everyone's reactions to situations felt very alive.

To be more specific, it's generally considered bad writing if someone doesn't know how to handle age-groups, for example, 8 year old kids would know nothing about love or how it feels beyond an innocent idea of it. Biggest problem I have with the writing is that they gave an 8 year old kid a love interest. There are a thousand ways to introduce character development for a little kid and someone thought it would be a great idea to go with one better suited for someone 5 years older. It doesn't help they never actually treat the character like a kid at all, mostly making him seem more mature than the human boys; that's another thing, those kids basically took his role away and someone on the writing team decided to just make him the brainy machine-maker instead of having childlike qualities, and maturity is not a given with intelligence, nor does knowledge of machines guarantee being able to deal with half the situations in that show rationally like the character does. Another example is how the supposed protagonist (The one with his name on the title) has no character flaws, swimming doesn't count, that's a physical flaw, but he's basically perfect, always right, and never faces conflict. That isn't human, and it makes it very hard to relate to him if he's just going to be the righteous shallow hero who never faces inner conflict. I mean hell, put the hero and the sidekick together, one is a little kid growing all the time, the other is an irresponsible guardian, this is a situation bound to spark flames that never does, in fact, the two act like they always agree. This isn't true for most teenagers and it certainly doesn't apply to two people in two different age-groups with two different interests and mindsets and a brotherly relationship.

It doesn't help that the protagonist's assumed one-sided love-interest just gets more and more batshit insane as the series goes on, meanwhile the protagonist is impervious to her, finds her annoying, but doesn't appear phased by her beyond a few seconds of interaction. This is another great way to give both characters more shades of color to their personalities beyond the shallow props that they were but was never used for more than comedic relief.

It's probably got a lot to do with 4Kids' involvement; they didn't think American children would be able to understand a lot of deep themes so they mostly left them out, added a human so people could relate, and only thought about each character from one or two angles; one is cool, the other's a nerd, one is a hot-head, another is a crazy bitch, etc.

I can't think of a game to recommend, none of them are really that outstanding. Probably Adventure DX because it has the best story but its gameplay isn't too interesting. You're probably better sticking with Nintendo if you want top-quality platformers or adventure games since most Sonic games are incredibly linear, short, and don't have anything in the way of collectibles or anything you'd expect from modern 3D games.

I'll try to respond to all your points, please don't get angry at me though.

First, you are on a site where cubs are often put into romantic stories and add sex on top and I enjoy it. I love stuffing cubs in romantic and adult stories, have at you! If a series does that, awesome.

Sonic is pretty flawed in the series, he's hot headed, doesn't think much about others, has troubles expressing emotions, he has plenty of character flaws if you ask me.
In a way it's much more like Chris is shown as Sonic's guardian, given that he's the responsible one and the voice of reason (Though he gets a bit annoying at time; Chris is also flawed however, he's overcautious, and his adult characteristics are both his strengths and his flaws)

I'd debate no sonic characters were ever children, children don't fight giant robots. If you want to hold Sonic X characters to the starnadrd of how real kids act... kids are selfish, simple-minded, egoistic, run to mama when they get scared, irresponsible, they don't pilot planes, don't fly, sonic franchise characters were never real kids, most of them anyway, in any way or form. Generally no children in any adventure series act like real, realistic children, if they are the main characters, because it 1.is hard to write 2.most likely wouldn't work for the plot.
As for tails being great at technology: it was the same with sonic colors, the other game i've seen didn't have much character at all, and no dialogs. So I can't say I have known a different tails.

I'm sorry if this annoys you, but I really liked the tails x cosmo romance.

Sonic ignores Ami exactly because he's a flawed character (which is a good thing), in this series he is simple-minded and self-centered to the point of having problems with dealing with other and/or understanding them.
Sonic has been given various characters to interact in different games and series, but from what I know he's generally portrayed as a heroic but self-centered entity who for the most part only cares about looking cool and proving himself, which I guess this series played with.

As for Ami she was given tsundere tendencies, but not very strong ones. She can be aggressive and bashful in this series, but the feeling for sonic is visible there, and it is to some extent explored inside the series, although in a more toned-down unclosed manner (which makes sense if Chris is supposed to be one of the two main characters, not Amy, if you would center on the relationship between Sonic and Amy, the action would have to focus on that, she's a secondary character in this series)

As for 4kids
"Censorship
Although all the episodes aired in the US, they were not presented full-length compared to the original Japanese version. In the Japanese version, some scenes from some Sonic X episodes contained material such as profanity, violence, blood, and death. As a result, 4Kids Entertainment removed most scenes containing these elements, due to the fact that the American version was rated TV-Y7 FV, although most of the fighting was kept in all the episodes. A glaring example of this is in Episode 3, where police-issue rifles have laser-blaster sound effects in the dub, despite obviously being gunpowder weapons."

I repeat, I have not watched the dubbed version, so I don't know how it compares, I watched the Japanese version.

Eh, well, I guess if you like that kind of thing...

I'm also on a site with plenty of people that like to see cubs as innocent little kids that can't be bothered with romantic involvement. I personally don't like romance at all, I think it's a waste of time and energy even IRL, can't take it seriously, and usually relate it (without intending any offense at anyone, it's just what I think of first) to inexperienced and overtly emotional teenagers that haven't learned to be rational and responsible while still managing to be too old and sexually mature to be cute. :V I write some dirty stuff but I don't involve my characters in romance, it's more of a game to them, and they aren't expected to have the same sexual level of understanding adults are, and there's a lot of people that relate to that side of it as well.

I just flat-out don't agree with the rest, which I guess is fine. Thing is, I read a lot of books, I probably read more books than play games, so I kinda tend to treat everything like a book and how a professional writer would treat a lot of situations, so I'm already incredibly nitpicky. :V

The dubbed version has horrible voice acting that happened to invade the games until Colors in 2010, if you liked the voice acting in Colors and you're curious, watch some cutscenes from Unleashed; same voice actors, although arguably better than they were in previous titles. (Arguably being the key word since they still sucked. :V)

And here you imply I don't read a lot and that I don't treat things like a professional writer would. Plus you imply all games have immature writing.

I can't agree with that, I'm almost feeling offended.
If you don't like kids romancing, you may like the Japanese version even less, because it's much more adult and explores all themes more deeply.
Kazekai
12 years, 4 months ago
That wasn't supposed to offend you, just explain why I don't agree. >_> You were the one telling me not to get angry.

And to clarify, I don't like anyone romancing. :V Part of the reason why I like cubs is because they aren't expected to, having them do the over-rated love thing defeats the purpose and ruins their image for me, not to mention I do not understand romance, I think it's just people's way of justifying having sex because of how it's seen in our society, but that's just my opinion.
supremekitten
12 years, 4 months ago
Hey, I did say "almost" ; p

I dunno about romancing, to me it's like a deep friendship. I don't mean things like dates and stuff, just loving each other. Sexual pleasure is just a fun bonus but it's not really required.

Anyway maybe we are just different.

There are many types of love, love between a child and his guardian, platonic love, love between friends, they are all love just different
I sort of like this model https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangular_theory_of_love
What I'd disagree with in that model is, I don' think there is one perfect type of love, they are all good just different.
Kazekai
12 years, 4 months ago
Oh, ok, well, yeah we're probably just really different. Love is probably subjective anyway, and probably not something everyone enjoys.
supremekitten
12 years, 4 months ago
Talis and Cosmo's love IS portrayed as pretty childish and immature, it's more like puppy love rather than mature adult love. (If that's the one you are talking about anyway)

The series portrays Cream as an even younger kid who doesn't think about this sort of love yet.

Akira was known to be incredible influential too.

Also so was Evangellion (the new movies that they make now are far better), Ninja Scroll

Here are a few of my suggestions:

Martian Successor Nadesico
Dominion Tank Police & New Dominion Tank Police
Laputa island in the sky (as well as many other studio Ghibli films. Also known as Castle in the Sky.)
Elfin Leid
Paranoia Agent
Princess Monoke
R.O.D. (the movie, which was in parts. It was quite interesting but felt it was too short and you could even read extra info when referencing the various famous people from the past that were cloned and appear in this)
Street Fighter 2 (the animated movie, which had many interesting parts and a great story too.)
Tenchi Muyo (all the different series as they were all very fun, though I didn't watch the last one that much)

I have many more anime, but these were the only ones I have that I felt were "influential" especially to me in giving me many different ideas for stories and the like.

Ok maybe you guys will be able to answer this question for me. I saw an anima on cable a few years ago, it was kinda corny but I liked it but can't remember the name of it. It was set in the future with 2 colonies of earth where the male and female populations have seperated and the males and females were fighting each other. The main character (male) was captured by the women (pirates) but an accident cause his ship to be able to merge with a few of the womens ships to create some poweful fighting ships. Long story short, the pirates fight a new 'evil' attacking both the male and female colonies and bring them both back together as one people. If anyone can tell me the name of this anima I would really appriciate it.
