Seeking College/University Advice

by
Hello all! Long time since i posted i know, well try to fix that this weekend.

Anyways i had a question for all of you that are either in College/University or have finished your courses and i'm hoping you can give me some good advice ^^.

So i'm in a situation... (caused by myself) where i need to complete 9 courses in a year and a half (all while still working full time) My only option is to take them through Open Learning/Distance Learning/ Doing it at home on my own time, whatever you want to call it.

So my question to you are the following:

1: How many courses do i dare take at a time? (I was thinking 5 over the summer and then 2 from Sep-Dec and 2 from Jan-May)

2: What courses should i take that wont destroy me with difficulty x.x

I have all of my core courses for my career i just apparently need more credits of courses so what the courses are mostly doesn't matter.

Thank you for your time and any advice given, anyone who has done something similar i'm particularly interested in talking to :3

Writing courses tend to be pretty easy, from what I've done. I finished a three-credit one in two weeks without any real difficulty (though it was the only one I was taking, since it was specifically made for a two-week schedule). Still, writing classes are trivial in most cases.

I have some experience in writing and have taken English courses before and passed them but how well i did greatly was affected by who was running the course. Some saw my creativity and structure design and gave me good marks, others focused more on the fact i was never taught any basics of university writing like APA format and nailed me to the wall for that =/

I'm studieng at an university and this questions are very difficult to awnser in general.

for the 1st, it highly depends on what would happen if you'd fail in an course. (depending on the instituiton you can do the test again a few weeks later or half an year later. Of course it also dpends on how much you can handle at the same time)

the 2nd one is an difficult as well. You should ask people who have done this course before or other courses of the professorial chair. The difficulty depends a lot of the chair. In some cases the same course was super easy one year ago, but becomes much more difficult with another professorial chair.

I don't know if this is very helpfull, but that's really something complex.

edit: it can be usefull to take more courses then you need and cancel this one wich seems to become to complex after a few weeks. (it can help but courses that are looking simple can still become very complex)

I know i'm asking something trhat doesnt have an easy answer x.x

If i fail a course, i believe all that happens is i won't get the credits i need and it will be a loss of money for me and i'd have to either retake or take another course to earn those credits. That being said i do have a clock on me to complete the 9 courses x.x

This isn't as easy for me as it should be, despite how i may appear online sometimes, in real life i'm not the type that can easily talk to people i don't know and ask advice...

I imagine if i take a course and cancel it i still have to pay for it though, no?

Thank you for your comments <3

You're welcome I've spend a lot of time with the same questions.

I'm just paying per semester and can take as many courses as I wish, but okay if you have to pay per course it's propably not the best idea.

I'm also not big in comeing up to other people myself. luckily I've found many friends over the semesters I can ask. I think this is an classical furry problem.

Maybe you could try to find some old exams if ther's an student council. (with much luck)

Yeah it is a typical furry problems i suppose, but mine is a little unique. I'm not sure how well you know my OC's but they kinda represent the two sides of me. Sis, the confident and in control one and DC, the shy and submissive one.

My problem in real life is many people rely on me or see me as i have to be for them. I have to be strong and maintain that facade, i can't ask for help or show weakness. But in reality i'm still like DC, unsure, passive and always worried x.x Online lets me be a lot more honest, as it does with most furries but i know it also can create problems like the one that faces me now.

I'll need to decide what college/university to register to first before i can do that, i imagine the easiest thing would the same ones i already have but their online course selection is lacking compared to others is all

Sorry for talking your ear off or perhaps getting to personal ^^;;

Don't worry I've more then enougth time in present. (Even I'm going to bed very soon)

Yes, I've seen much porn with your OCs. I've an Mew OC myself. She's also not what you would expect if would meet me in realife. But I can understand that it becomes even more complicated if other people rely on you. *offers a hug*

Yes, the right choose of the university can have big effects. But it's difficult to find out witch one is better or even worse.

About our online course selection system I could tell you storys. It has so many problems and bugs. Per example I've got an 1.0 in one course (best possible mark) now it's very obviously that I've also passed that course ... but not acording to your course control system. And there're much much more problems. X3

So far I've been taking 4 courses 2 per day like monday/wdnesday I take the first 2 and then on tuesday and thursday I take the rest so typically I leave at 12pm so I have enough time to do whatever and I get like 12 credits in total if I'm correct?

yup, that sounds right, i need 27 credits, which is basically 9 course. Typically 4 courses a semester is average it is just i have to cram more into a smaller amount of time =/

Damn that sucks I hope you're able to find a comfortable shedule for this seeing as how college/uni is stressful already at times :/

human bio classes tend to be easy, with minimal homework and class time for 3-4 units depending on the class

Biology interests me as well, which usually helps with making things go easier when your interested in them. There is just so many different Bio courses i worry about taking the wrong one and being overwhelmed with an area i didnt expect

Two questions:
1. Do you work in the Summer?
2. Are you good with math?

If the reason you're planning on taking more courses in the Summer is because you don't work Summers, than I guess that makes sense, otherwise, that's a terrible idea, as Summer semesters are typically shorter, so you get a harder crunch time.  If the semester is actually longer than Spring or Fall semesters, than I guess it won't be too bad.

If you're good at math, taking some intermediate or sampler math courses can be a pretty easy way to get credits, assuming the distance learning math classes only require you take exams.  I actually did like, 3-4 math exams in one week for one such course, because the class didn't require any homework.  It's usually pretty easy to learn enough for a solid B or A on the exam, if you've got a head for maths.  Geometry, Trig, and Math for the Liberal Arts are usually pretty easy.  But check first, because I can't guarantee they won't require homework.

1. Kinda, i dont work my actual job in summer but i usually do work 2 weeks or so of another job, but the majority of summer i dont work

2.I was reasonably good at math

Your assumption is correct in that the summer semester is shorter and i thought it was a better fit cause i mostly dont work in the summer.

I always liked Trig and Geometry, i just struggled more with the more advanced stuff. From what i have viewed on course sheets, it looks like the online courses for most of the courses (but i havent checked math yet) are made up of 3-4 assignments and a final that determine your mark.

Thank you for your advice and comments!

the first, is simple and wholy depends on your schedule outside of school as well as the classes themselves. They post hours in terms of hours per week, and depend on how many sessions you have per week. your sessions, in that respect can range from 50 min, to an hour or so. So, I'd look at how many hours per day am I willing to spend in classes- and substantially studying for them. as a rule of thumb, it's recommended that you spend two to three hours studying for every hour in class- for each class.

Unfortunately, the second issue is much more subjective, and also greatly depends on the teacher. However, for someone like you, I'd look into art classes- as electives. with your skill, you shouldn't have too much problems with the course work.

I am a Bio Major. If you can tell me the area in biology that most interests you I may be able to point you in the right direction.

Also, this is why universities have counselors- some universities prevent you from enrolling in classes w/o talking to said counselor. That is also something to look into.

I was in a situation like this and just stayed in school another semester. If you don't have the ability to, then I'd suggest taking mainly easier classes when you are taking more classes and then harder classes when you're taking fewer.
FYoshi

Well part of the problem with that is i don't know what courses would be easier or harder then others =/

Also, talk to your school to make sure you're getting credit for any AP classes you might have taken in high school

So what do you study?

If you haven't already, try some sociology courses. The beginner courses are not difficult, and (in my experience) they are awesome. Definitely eye opening.

Oh, for taking a course and cancelling, you do have to pay for it. Unless you drop it before the cut off date. (With mine it was two weeks or so)

For doing five courses versus four... It really depends. How well do you handle stress? The act of juggling a full course load and life outside of school is can be stressful for some, as well as the extra workload. And also how well you can absorb information.

I did five at a time, and it is manageable if you don't have a ton of obligations outside of school.

Hope this helps a little.
