The progress of the beta!

I was thinking of writing an update once a day to give the status of the game but deep down I'd felt like that is overkill.  In fact, I was thinking on waiting till Sunday to write an update since I'd probably have more stuff done by then, but now seems like a good time since I have a lot of personal stuff to do this weekend.  Thanks to Skyrim being released, beta testing has come to a bit of a standstill.  I expected this considering that there are more people hyped for Skyrim then this game so I'm left to do a little polishing.

So far though, the beta testing has been running smoothly.  It's much more then ironing out the bugs, after a few changes to the overall game play I need to gauge if the game is still fun to play.  For most, they say that the game is still fun, especially with all the new content and options to explore.  Some have said that the game may have become more difficult then it should be.  I think the biggest difficult when it came to writing out the stuff is keeping certain events consistent with others so sudden transitions of events don't feel jaring.  Of course, as Aval0n and I stated before, this game is not about realism.  Certain things are meant to be over the top, silly, and have little consistency.

One issue that had come to light while testing the game is the save feature.  I really want to make sure the save feature works this time since that was a hot topic last time.  At first I was actually having even more problems with saving since I switched from using variables to using arrays.  Saving arrays was causing this weird auto saving thing that was making save files overall worthless.  My fear was that I wasn't going to get this fixed in time for release.  However with some trial, error, and Google, we were able to get the save feature work with 5 full save files this time.

Something I forgot to ask last time in the previous journal, was the issue people were having keeping their save files.  I know a lot of written but it's difficult to find among the clutter of comments on the previous game.  I was hoping that perhaps someone could give me a rundown again to make sure the game saved properly when someone is playing the game in a web browser.  I would like to add that to the "How to Play" tutorial section at the beginning of the game so the question isn't overly asked again.  ^v^

So overall, the beta testing is going a lot better then expected.  A boat load of problems have been fixed and I'm still making tweaks to the overall stats.  I'm really hoping that you all will like this despite all of delays and set backs.  I still can't say when the game will be ready, and I still don't want to set a date in stone yet out of fear of fan backlash.  I'm doing everything in my power to make sure the game feels somewhat complete.  My only issue is that despite all the new sections of the game to explore, there's will still be a lack of art to accompany the text.  Plus, after this release I'll be pretty much done with this game.

I have a plan to update it after releasing it, perhaps once a month maybe with new art, but that will still be on Aval0n and the rest of the artistic team.  I'm not saying that I resent this game now, I just kind of want to move on from this chapter and pursue my own ideas after all the experience I gained from this.  With the mess of setbacks this game has received, I can't help but ask, will anyone be able to trust me enough to help me with a game idea.  Oh well we'll see what time has to say.  That's all I really have to update for now.  Thank again for all your support.  ^v^

Have you or Aval0n(and others) ever thought about creating a community website?
Not just for BSC but for all of your projects.
IB is fine and all I was just thinking you might have an easier time with feedback and community support with a website with forums.
That is of course if you can figure out how to moderate them.
Some PHP engines are easy, others are almost imposable.

PS. Thanks for the update b( ^.^ )d

Glad everything goes well, and hope you get some good relaxing time after it's over..I mean, I know you're in school..I'm saying like, a little less stress than what you're currently dealing with..y-you know what I mean.

Thanx for the update! Not being much of a gamer I have no idea what Skyrim is, although it sounds too much like SKYNET-in an age where computers play jeopardy can Terminators be far behind?
Set backs are an unfortunate part of life and there's no real way of avoiding them. You still have my support (for what it's worth)

I never had any issues with saving, unless there was an update to the game file (but that was understandable, especially with the added game stability).  I actually play the latest publicly released game through GOM Player on my hard drive now, and the save feature still works great.  I don't know how changing the game variables to arrays will affect saving, but it sounds like it's working fine, so more power to you.
You're right, updating daily is overkill, but I like that you're helping us keep track of progress like this.  Like I said in your last update, any signs of life go a long way towards keeping (this) fan's interest up.  Thanks for the progress report, and I hope everything continues to go smoothly.

(Also, if you get a chance and you like single player video games, play either Skyrim or Arkham City.  Both are amazing.)

Actually, don't start Skyrim unless you are very good at time management.  Elder Scrolls is a series that will take over your life if you're not prepared to handle it.  I consider it the Reddit of video games.  I'm not even joking, I put almost 200 hours into Oblivion (the previous installment), and I didn't even come close to 100% completion.  There is an endless amount of stuff to do in that game, so consider it either recommended or warned against.  Decide for yourself.

though elder scrolls is a long game title in its self. i love playing the 3rd one. as it was always more in-depth with its surroundings. XD i still to this day would love to buy the 3rd installment and play it on my 360 lol

I've been playing BSC on various other sites (cause I didn't know about IB until recently) for awhile.  From what I've seen, you've done everything in your power to not only take care of real life an college, but the game as well.

If you start another project, I'd be happy to check it out.  And I promise not to bug you about deadlines...  heh heh.

Rock on, dudes. A daily update would probably be overkill, but I know techie people like me would be pretty interested if once in a while you'd mention a few specific issues you ran across and fixed, and a quick layman's on why they happened and how you fixed them.

Most of the problems that come with ironing out the bugs in this game is mainly syntax errors and the like.  I think the biggest issue has been me labeling stuff backwards.  Some of the beginning bugs causes options to immediately go to sex scenes because the buttons were going to the wrong labels.  There's also the issue of making sure stats get added up properly as well.

I'm not sure how much longer I'll be using flash though.  I was reading something earlier that adobe is dropping their support to flash soon and will mainly be focusing on HTML5.  I'm discovering that HTML5 would actually be a lot easier to program a game like this in, but I have no plans on learning it any time soon.

If you want the game to be challenging but give people an out so they whine less, you could always put in a time-limit disabling feature that they can turn on.  They won't be able to get the ending but they can keep playing as much as they like.  Just a thought.

To reitterate what's in the journal, this will kind of be my final update before I move on to something else.  I'm not abandoning it, I just want to release it with a feeling that it's mostly complete.  I'll still provide support by add art and maybe some more small content, but after this I just can't dedicate myself to it anymore like I have.  There comes a moment you just have to say "Done!".

Hey I know there is a high probability that this has been addressed, however if it has not; how is the new time set? Example being there was a limit to how many days you could play, with all the added features will it not be possible to play through all of them before you run out of days to explore?
FeatheredAdventures
6 years, 11 months ago
Sorry, it's still 7 day.  One of the things I forgot to mention in the journal is that the "Once A Day" restriction on most of the events have been removed.  There is still a handful that can only be done once a day to prevent a certain level of spamming, but for those achievement hunters out there who want to see everything, it has become a little easier.

Awesome, I don't mind saving and taking different paths I just wanted to get kind of an idea of what's ahead of me. After I asked this I had thought about the question a little more and thought of something to add; With the side games/mini quests, are there interaction options? Example being do they use up energy? I'm cool if you would rather wait till the unveiling, I just thought I would ask. The concept behind the game has inspired me to get my character strip into a sim version. I'm really looking forward to the progress you and Aval0n have come up with. ^.^

I really did want to add some simple minigames after learning how to create top down shooters, a tetris style puzzle game, and even a simple fighting game, but considering how long BSC has been delayed I realized that such endeavors would be fruitless.  As for interaction, the cellphone works, and you can meet characters randomly in the city at times.  Plus there are a lot of random options too.
AegisKao
6 years, 11 months ago
If I personally knew how to write scripting for minigames I would lend my services however I'm techtarded when it comes to such things, hence the reason I draw instead. The minigame idea has been on my mind a lot when I play BSC because it would be a good way to earn items, such as gaining rings in an arcade rather than being limited to a set amount. If it didn't require so much data to make a minigame of sonic for the sega genesis, I thought that would be a nice way to bring the classic back for a teaser. I do have to say if you had tetris in the game I believe I would be completely distracted playing tetris =) or if sonic met pacman

Thank you very much for the update. Id say once a week update posting is more than enough for a hobby, instead of millisecond twit.. SQUIRREL.

Ah.. Where was I..  Shinneeeeeeyy..

Um.. is it me or is online becoming distracting because there are ever fewer self imposed limitations?

As for the save files, those were a pain the only way I could think of doing it was using the cookie function, thn it was trying to think of how to get teh cookie to hold more than a time stamp and a single value hash, then make it persistant etc, the actual cokies seen are rediculoulsy overcomplex. After all, the Server uses them to keep track of You.. so all teh cookie should store is a hash, your preferences are on the server.

Then again, why have cookies at all. It only tracks the machine, not you. Your login name and password are all thats used to define you, so Im really confused about cookies.

Oh well, Back to virtualised network based hardware structures and homemorphic encryption models.

Finally managed to ride Cream on  the bike in the old beta.. Thank you. 8)

Hopefully the save system I have set up now will work properly.  I've been doing more research and it's still up to the person to enable cookies on their browser if they wish to see their save files saved.  Thank you again for your support on the matter.  ^v^

Thanks for the update. Its nice to hear some good news, In regard to your question, I am excited at the opportunity to support you! I don't want to place blame, but it seems most of the delays and problems were on Aval0n not submitting scripts and art. What zero said :P It's a heavily addictive single player rpg where you can be anything, from the lizards called argonians who can breath underwater, to the cat-like khajiit that look extremely cuddly while being dangerous at the same time.

You could be anything from the chosen protector of the realm, to a renowned thief, or perhaps something even darker, a skilled assassin! The Elder Scroll series has massive worlds as well, I've played skyrim for about 60 hours so far, must have explored only 20-30% of the world (and this isn't even the biggest!)

http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/ might help you understand a bit more :P

Well what I mean by help is finding the right artist or team that can help in providing content or other types of support.  While I'm sure there are those out there willing to help, they're still tough to find, and it's even more difficult to find someone who is equally dedicated as well.  As for the donation, I'm sure Aval0n will appreciate it.  I haven't talked with Aval0n in a while though.

Because of all the work I've done with the game, I do feel like I deserve a fair share of the donation and for a time he had been sharing the donations with me since the beginning of the game.  This hasn't happened lately though, but I don't really bring up this issue because I know he's been having trouble keeping up with living expenses.  I really could use a payday after that whole lawsuit debacle, but I'm not greedy.  I prefer to stay humble and not let things like that get to me.  Thank you for your continued support.  ^v^  *Feather snuggles*

I would have a suggestion for you.

You say your finished with this game and you feel pressured to add new features, because the fan community always asks for an update.
Maybe your going to add new art to the game every month or so, but, if you do so, you will still have fans, who can't wait for an early update.
AvalonX and Co may also not want to continue with this project, because you and AvalonX have a lot to coop with in your lives.

This sounds to me, that the development of the game will come to an end sooner or later, but I think some people would like to have even more stuff in this game, want to improve the quality of the game logic/art, want to contribute their own art or want to improve your source code, add new features and so on...

My suggestion is: Make your project open source.
When you do this, your game can still be improved, even if you choose to quit this project.
You and AvalonX don't have to be pressured, because then you have put your fans in your shoes.

Your slogan could be: When you want improvements to the game, do it yourself.

I really hope, that you and your team take this suggestion in consideration, I wish all of you a nice, recreative sunday.

With best wishes,
hpbunny

I have considered plenty of times posting the file.  The source file itself is almost 35mbs in size, which is surprisingly light compared to some of the other projects I've toyed around with.  In time, Aval0n I do plan on posting the file along with the scripts and other content but probably a few months after the game is released.  I'm not really familiar with how to host large files like this though.

FeatheredAdventures
6 years, 11 months ago
In the past I have played around with the idea of maybe doing an expanded sequel, kind of like that GTAIII was to the first two games, plays the same but offers SO much more content and options, it ends up feeling like a brand new game.  I'm not planning on pursuing that though.  I'm at the moment working on a script for a new games that plays a little like a spiritual sequel to BSC, but contains my own story idea an interests.  It will involve the Sonic characters and I'll probably write a journal about it soon after the game is released.  ^v^

Is the project you want to work on after still the robozu-type game? and again, will there be art?
FeatheredAdventures
6 years, 11 months ago
Before that lawsuit debacle happened, I did have a short tech demo made where I had pretty much remade Robozou almost frame by frame, but then I realized that I didn't want to make something that was technically a remake of another game, I wanted to do something that at least game off original.  The game will still revolve around Tails and a mind control device he accidentally invented, but the rules for controlling other characters are different.  And yes, there will be original art for it.  I've got an awesome guy helping me out with it.  ^v^

I have some thoughts about what might cause problems with saving.
I assume you're using a shared object to save the game.
If so, you can use the flush() function to make it write the save data immediately. Otherwise, it'll wait until the game is closed.
Another possible issue is if you're attempting to copy objects or arrays.

Copying an array or an object is different from copying a variable.
You can't just type myVar = myArray to copy an array, because what that actually does is store a reference to it, which means that array will be accessible to both the original variable and myVar. You're not making a copy. It's the same array being accessed using two different variables.
If you need to copy an array, you need to do it manually by creating a new array, and then copying each element, one by one.
Of course, if any of the elements are arrays or objects, you'll run into the referencing issue again.

If you need an easy way to truly copy an object or an array, I wrote a copyObject function that makes it easy.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43729227/misc/copyObject.zip
It'll work on both arrays and objects. If you open this file in flash or a text editor, you'll see instructions about how to use it at the top.

Thank you for your feedback on that.  I actually did solve the problem, the irony is that I originally started using arrays because they were easier to manage, which I thought would make them easier to save.  In all honestly it just made it a bit more difficult since I pretty much had to do what you mentioned and create a new set of variables to save.  *Snuggles*

ty for the update  feathered XD (think like this: You are a better programmer than most of us and therefore of course people will want you to help them with projects...) keep up the good work and BE HAPPY (thanks for everything you do(including being you))!!

oh and for skyrim:
IF SKYRIM CRASHES ON LOAD UP:
If you're on Vista or Win 7 check your sound/audio settings (Control Panel).

They should be 44100Hz at 24bit or 16bit.

Also make sure your antivirus is passive/disabled.
Disable anything you can that might interefer with game-play (re: anti-spam/HP printer software/etc, etc, etc). You shouldn't need Steam logged-in online to play.

Keep your video settings default.
Don't juice them up.

Have you patched it up?
There is a Day One patch (v1.1) already to download.
Check your version.

Disable DiVX... it plays havoc on Steam games.

As much as I would like to play skyrim, I can't afford it at the moment.  Unless I get a donation or get the game as a gift I'm gonna have to wait until the price goes down.  I don't mind though, I really want to get BSC out first.  ^v^

At one point you mentioned issues with fleshing out Library scenes.
Although the library may be 'dead zoned'.
Some possible suggestions if the game gets more content.
Other books that Cream would like you to read to her.
Meeting some of the characters there (finding out where they Mochi Mochi shop is while Cream joins the 'tell a story' group)
Renting a few videos from the library. Having one end up being a 'soft porn' rather than what the box said it was supposed to be.
Explaining to Cream what the man is doing to the girl, or her piping up with 'Oh I've seen Mommy do this.... (leads to more naughtiness at home later).

Is this next update going to be a final version? Or is it going to be even another update way ahead into the future?

Final version, but I think he said he'd be adding some art to it. I guess that means he's getting the coding and events/writing done, but he might add some pictures to go along with those events.

For me it will be the final version I'll dedicate a lot of work too.  I'll still provide support and updates but after this I don't really want to dedicate anymore serious time to it.

Hey man take all the time you need. I love your work and I have been keeping up to date with all of your updates since the beginning, and I do not mind waiting a bit longer.

I love ya man and I hope you work at a pace that is best for you and don't worry about people being inpatient because once it is done they wont care how long it took.

This is a letter from someone who holds manly love in his heart for you.
PS. manly love is not gay love, manly love is the love between two true men who care for there kin.

Hey, just letting you know Skyrim is AWESOME, but I am still waiting for this game to come out. I was a little disappointed at first to know about the beta testing, but I've waited this long I could wait a bit more. Got a few of my friends addicted to the older version and now they are psyched about the new beta and the release of the newest version.

For what it's worth this game is pretty good for what you guys have done overall. Even with all the set backs. You have lives as well and things don't always go according to plan, but keep at it and I can't wait for the release.

Hi Avian, listen I kinda wanted to ask if the morality matters in the game?
Is there different options if lets say you are good or evil?
And if there aren't any then is there any plans to add this?
This is giving me some ideas for future games similar to this, after im done with slavemaker 3 ofcourse.
FeatheredAdventures
6 years, 11 months ago
Yes, it does this time.  In order to do some events or gain some times your morality has to be in the negatives.  But these are only during events though, it doesn't actually serve that much of an impact on the endings.

I know what oyu mean about wanting to move on, but enjoying the game all the same. Personally I don't have skyrim (made a promise to buy only 1 more game before christmas, and I've bought it. Saints row the third and like the game it's random silly fun, barely realistic at all, but I digress) so I'd always be free, not ot mention I have no life too, lol.

I'm sure everything you've learnt, having taking BSC from where it was, back to it's roots and adding new things should've given you a lot of knowledge for the pokemon games you wish to focus on. Can't wait to play those as I could image a conversation like this:
"What are you playing?"
"Pokemon"
"Aren't you a bit old for that?"
*grins* "not this kind of game."

I think the endings should be like this:

A) -RWC, -Morale, +SEX = JAIL
B) -RWC, -Morale, no SEX = WE NEVER CALL YOU AGAIN :)
C) +RWC, -Morale, no SEX = PERVERT
D) +RWC, -Morale, +SEX = MAN OF THE HOUSE
E) +RWC, +Morale, no SEX = SAMARITAN
F) +RWC, +Morale, +SEX = BOYFRIEND
G) +RWC, +Morale, +SEX + all friends and find where is Vanilla = ORGY

We know a lot about how much the endings will change, and how much the phone calls (should) add to the game. I have two questions:

-How will the day-to-day interactions change? Ex. Are we going to be doing the same things as in this version 90% of the time (Watch Cartoons, Play Video Games, Play a Board Game in the Living Room), or are there gonna be a bunch of new things to do, or new options within those base options?

-Will it be reasonable to do all the options available in a single run through? Even in this version it can be challenging, if not outright impossible, to find every possible ending to every possible event in one run through, just because of the fact that approx. 150 energy per day limits your options, especially if you have gotten to the point that you can take off her dress and the # of options double up. In your average game I rarely even go outside, just because I can do all the options at home and still run out of energy! (Of course, I HAVE done the ones outside; I'm just saying it would be kinda cool if it felt more necessary at some point. Like a day when Cream really wants to go outside - say after a day of rain - and you get bonus points for doing so?)

OH, and I guess one more question?

Can I be on the Robozou-Tails beta testing team :3

That was probably my favorite H-game ever, up until BSC came out.

I agree once you get her dress off your energy amount is horrible. When you can do the "rare" events like skinny dipping you really fall short.
