I was thinking of writing an update once a day to give the status of the game but deep down I'd felt like that is overkill. In fact, I was thinking on waiting till Sunday to write an update since I'd probably have more stuff done by then, but now seems like a good time since I have a lot of personal stuff to do this weekend. Thanks to Skyrim being released, beta testing has come to a bit of a standstill. I expected this considering that there are more people hyped for Skyrim then this game so I'm left to do a little polishing.
So far though, the beta testing has been running smoothly. It's much more then ironing out the bugs, after a few changes to the overall game play I need to gauge if the game is still fun to play. For most, they say that the game is still fun, especially with all the new content and options to explore. Some have said that the game may have become more difficult then it should be. I think the biggest difficult when it came to writing out the stuff is keeping certain events consistent with others so sudden transitions of events don't feel jaring. Of course, as Aval0n and I stated before, this game is not about realism. Certain things are meant to be over the top, silly, and have little consistency.
One issue that had come to light while testing the game is the save feature. I really want to make sure the save feature works this time since that was a hot topic last time. At first I was actually having even more problems with saving since I switched from using variables to using arrays. Saving arrays was causing this weird auto saving thing that was making save files overall worthless. My fear was that I wasn't going to get this fixed in time for release. However with some trial, error, and Google, we were able to get the save feature work with 5 full save files this time.
Something I forgot to ask last time in the previous journal, was the issue people were having keeping their save files. I know a lot of written but it's difficult to find among the clutter of comments on the previous game. I was hoping that perhaps someone could give me a rundown again to make sure the game saved properly when someone is playing the game in a web browser. I would like to add that to the "How to Play" tutorial section at the beginning of the game so the question isn't overly asked again. ^v^
So overall, the beta testing is going a lot better then expected. A boat load of problems have been fixed and I'm still making tweaks to the overall stats. I'm really hoping that you all will like this despite all of delays and set backs. I still can't say when the game will be ready, and I still don't want to set a date in stone yet out of fear of fan backlash. I'm doing everything in my power to make sure the game feels somewhat complete. My only issue is that despite all the new sections of the game to explore, there's will still be a lack of art to accompany the text. Plus, after this release I'll be pretty much done with this game.
I have a plan to update it after releasing it, perhaps once a month maybe with new art, but that will still be on Aval0n and the rest of the artistic team. I'm not saying that I resent this game now, I just kind of want to move on from this chapter and pursue my own ideas after all the experience I gained from this. With the mess of setbacks this game has received, I can't help but ask, will anyone be able to trust me enough to help me with a game idea. Oh well we'll see what time has to say.
