Foxy VR

Hi everyone, I hope you're doing well!

I've got a little announcement to make. I'm swiftly wrapping up development on One Special Night with Foxy VR, which has been a little pet project of mine over the last two months or so. The title may already suggest it, but this is a port of last year's animation to VR, particularly the Oculus Rift. This will of course be released free of charge.

But I'd like to ask for your input on the matter of release. Namely, when you'd prefer me to release it. You see I'm a bit torn on the subject. Typically I'll try to get something out there as soon as it is ready, but considering that the vast majority will not be in possession of a Rift for at least four months, that would mean the vast majority would not be able to view it. So I considered waiting till around March to release it in sync with the Oculus Rift release, as to not let exposure whither in stagnation.

Then again, for the fraction of you that do own a devkit Rift, this might come as a bit annoying. So I would like to know your opinion on this.

Is this a prerecorded video? The Gear VR just came out officially, and that can handle perspective-warped stereoscopic video no problem.

Oh sorry, perhaps I should've clarified. But no, the animations are exported and played through Unity. This is to avoid the limitations of 180/360 3D video such as lack of positional tracking.

This is also a reason why I had to avoid Gear VR for now, as there are features used in Foxy VR that I've read are problematic on Android. I hope to design future experience to be a bit better suited for cross platform releases.

Ah, that totally makes sense, I just wasn't sure about the format of your animation. I'd recommend hanging onto it for a while, so you can give it another look closer to the date, and maybe release it just a few days before Oculus hits, to hype furries up. :) But that's only a suggestion.

At first I was going to do that, but since there was little feedback on this, I gotta assume the animation has a somewhat niche appeal. So instead, I'm going to release it sooner on the Saturday a week before Christmas, in spirit with the holidays.

Then when I inevitably have to rebuild for the Oculus Runtime 1.0, I'll release that version along with the Rift itself. That way people that are itching for it can try and test it in advance. And if all fails for GearVR, I could always render a 360 degree video for it. It's not as great, but then at least GearVR users get something.

And who knows, by that point I might have another VR project about ready for release. Then that will also syphon people back to Foxy. Overall, it's not a super great loss to release it soon rather than later.

It's rather vivid, even if I do say so myself. You'll often hear ''It felt like it was right in my face...'' in VR experience reports. Well, there's a part in this where that couldn't be more true.

It'll be released very, very soon. Rumour has it, at about the same time as a white bearded gentlemen makes his rounds.
