VICTORY

After nearly two years of searching...

After numerous false hopes, many bouts with despair, and running out of several "tiers" of unemployment...

After having made plans for tomorrow which will have to be rescheduled...

I HAVE A JOB.

iSoftStone got back to me. They want me to start tomorrow. It was all I could do to remain calm on the phone rather than bouncing around yelling "YESYESYESYESYES!!!"

Which is basically what I'm doing right now. Ahem. Yes.

Awesomecake! So glad for you :) Yesyesyes!

In about to be in the same boat myself, will get my final paycheck soon. It's scary.

Still, there should I hope be no shortage of sysadmin/coder work in the Austin area. It's like a second silicon valley.

Any job-hunting tips?

Thank you!!

As far as tips go, pushing out applications is great for getting unemployment checks, but to actually get a job you need to post your resume on lots of job sites, keep it updated, and keep your network of friends and acquaintances in the know about your job situation and qualifications. It's been my experience that a blindly thrown application almost never leads to an interview (though it certainly might, about 1 in 100 did!) but two out of two (and potentially three out of three, after this year) of the permanent post-college jobs I've had were gotten by people within the company approaching ME. Flack + Kurtz I got because I was friends with the hiring manager's daughter's boyfriend, while Onvia approached me about a permanent position on my last day as a temp with them. And now, someone at my latest employer contacted me about the position a few weeks ago based on seeing my resume posted online. (It's a two-month temporary position, but I have hopes it'll convert just like Onvia did.)

And on that note, throwing your resume into the ring for temporary jobs IS a viable strategy. You may still have that 1 in 100 chance of getting an interview as I did, but temp jobs can often lead to permanent jobs. That permanent job you applied for where they said they hired someone internally? Likely one of their temps had first pick at it. You could be that temp.

Good call :)

I've never had a job when I haven't had some kind of connection to the company first: but then, that's because I always go through all the places I have some kind of connection with, before tackling the more anonymous "job market".

So far, I've never had much problem finding a job, but this time, I'm living in a strange country, with few contacts. It's...

...actually, it's kinda exciting! :D

Hooray! Glad you're back among the workforce Alfie. Hopefully you'll be happily employed there and well paid for many years to come. Also, my schedule is probably changing as well. Soon I'll be having Saturdays and Sundays off. Here's hoping we'll still have some time to get together. *hugs* Anyway, grats on the job!

So, what will you be doing at iSoftStone? Computer stuffs?
Alfador
6 years, 9 months ago
Thank you!! *huggles* Yes, computer stuff... they want me to do testing for a team that's working with a telecommunications company on their mobile device (being deliberately vague as to company names here) testing the device's communication with the "cloud".

>they want me to do testing for a team that's working with a telecommunications company on their mobile device

Just let me know if you've inadvertently become a henchman for a James Bond type villain who's building a superlaser. ;)

>testing the device's communication with the "cloud".

I am still not sure what this "cloud" is. I bought an album off Amazon the other day, and they reeeeally wanted me to download it into this cloud thing. The 'No; save only to computer' button was tiny. I became suspicious.

Also, I finally got around to doing something I'd been meaning to for a while. Man, Discord is an absolute dick!

I'll be sure to. XD That said, I'd be in deep trouble if this were around the Cold War era because the company is owned by a Chinese corporation and half the people on my team have Russian surnames and accents.

It's a prettied-up term for "We'll put it on our servers and never tell you where." On the positive side, it means that a single point of failure is unlikely to take out the whole system, and you can more easily access it from multiple devices. On the negative side, if that single point of failure is a) your own connectivity (highly likely if your ISP is a douche or you're riding in an airplane) or b) the company folding up and shutting down, or just shutting down the service... you're SCREWED. I prefer the way Steam does its "cloud" in that the data is ALWAYS actually downloaded to your machine, even though it's synchronized with their servers. That's why often enough when quitting out of a game, there'll be a short pause for it to resynch with Valve's servers. It's the best of both worlds: easy access to your data from any computer with Steam installed, but also easy access to your data when you can't connect to Steam.

The way different companies do it varies, of course.

He's Q. What'd you expect? =^_^= Actually I read that they were working on the script, and when they heard John DeLancie was cast for Discord's voice, they made a few changes to make him MORE Q-like.

Ohski noski, comrade!!

>It's a prettied-up term for "We'll put it on our servers and never tell you where."

Sounds about right. Also, I imagine that they much prefer that they stay in control of people's downloads, so that the customers can't decide to share those downloads.

Sounds smart. Also, is Steam Valve, or is Steam a separate thing that runs a lot of Valve stuff?

Actually, what surprised me was how much nastier he was than Q! At his core, Q always had good, or at least merely mischievous, intentions. He respected his opponents when they earned that respect. Discord just cheated like a bastard!

Also, the ending of Lesson Zero almost made me tear up a little. And Luna Eclipsed was a ton of fun. I think the writing might be even better this season!

I'm pretty sure that Steam is simply a program and service owned by Valve. Which leads to confusion when I/anybody else talks about "Steam" meaning the company that controls Steam i.e. Valve, or "Valve" meaning the servers or service comprising Steam.

Point. When Captain Picard figured out what was going on and pushed to undo his mistakes in "Tapestry" and "All Good Things..." Q let him fix things... when Fluttershy didn't rise to the bait and kept her kind nature, Discord just subverted her by force. (Alternate theory states that she was actually trolling Discord.)

Makes sense to me! They're in their groove and have used their success to get a bit more leeway with the higher-ups. Notice the absence of the ei "educational and informative" logo in the top left of recent episodes... indicating that they're no longer hamstrung by the stringent requirements of such a rating from the FCC. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E/I

Right. Cool; that means I can praise their business practices simultaneously. Saves time. ;)

Yep. Moral Event Horizon for sure.

>(Alternate theory states that she was actually trolling Discord.)

...I don't think Fluttershy is capable of trolling.

Which, ironically, probably will end up making them even more educational and informative, because they don't have to do it by someone else's rules.

>*squeeeeeeeeeee* also Scootawolf.

Yes, the costumes in general were just wonderful. Though I was sure Luna would end up being more pissed at Zecora. It took me a moment, but I did kinda like the moral. When you can't fight perception, work with it instead.

Also, I got another chapter done Heart On Wheels. It's the most severely yiffy chapter yet! :D
