Got a Wacom

So... my tablet finally came in today and to my utter dismay, I don't know how to use the damn thing.  One thing I noticed right off the bat is that it isn't the same as pencil and paper.  Well, that and I don't think the bundled software is the best program for my endeavors.  I might try GIMP out to see how that works, but I don't know.  One thing I know for sure: I'm gonna have to learn how to draw all over again.

I guess I should ask what the best "free" software is to use with this thing?

I think I can get used to GIMP, it's just getting used to drawing with the tablet now.  It seems for the moment I've lost all control of what I was doing on paper.  Don't know if this has anything to do with the default tablet settings or not.

Well in SAI there is a stabilizer that smooths lines so they aren't as shaky.

It's great to hear it arrived, hopefully one of your fellow artists can suggest what's the best free software to use with it.

Sai.
Also you'll need to tweak its driver settings to something you feel is better.
But I have a crappy one so it doesn't always work the same way, which makes things difficult.

I'd might recommend you get a scanner sometime, its best to practice by tracing your scanned stuff.

I can send you a copy of Paint Tool SAI if you want. Let me know and I'll link it to you.

Personally, I find drawing with a tablet is all about the same hand-eye coordination that you'd previously established on paper. As soon as your mind can synchronize the movements of your hand on the tablet with the cursor on the screen, you should be good to go.

I already found a copy of SAI that's portable, so no worries there.  I think my next step is to get a scanner or find a scanned image in my stash and see if I can trace over the drawing with the tablet.  I have a couple of off-days coming up, which means it's time to learn this baby.

Don't worry about it. It takes a few days to get used to it, then it seems more natural than using a mouse.
