Well, technically you can buy the rights to a character, or simply ask for the rights of one, like I did recently. :3 Depends on what kind of agreement you want to make with the original artist. Vice versa if you want to sell one of your characters for a profit. Other artists like to hold auctions to possibly get more money that way, but it's completely up to you on what you want to do. :3
