Mother Nature's a Bitch

House was struck by lightning in some form or fashion a few days ago x3 We think it hit nearby but not the house directly. Buuut it seemed to find it's way into the house via the cable lines. Fried the modem, router, switch, my stereo, my laptop's power supply, as well as Bob and I's TV. We just now got the modem replaced by who I has to say is probably the best cable tech I've ever had called over. He came over four hours early and walked in, plugged something into the modem, said it was bad, put in a new one, checked everything out and strolled on back out to his van. Sharp contrast to the kind but very dimwitted servicer we had in Tampa x3 Replaced the router, switch and my laptop's power supply is coming via the mail. We got off pretty lucky, especially me! I was a few moments away from trying to restart the router when that quarter sized ball of lightning arced over from the modem to the router, spectacular sight but I almost got struck by lightning! :o

Actually, never mind, they do. I just totally forgot until I realized just how the roof got replaced, heh. Still I don't think I could.

if your living there i believe you can but you may need to get the owners to do it on your behalf also i think there is tenant insurance

I can't say they're very competent when it comes to such matters, dealing with stuff like, heh.

Yikes!
Glad to hear that you're Okay!
It's hearing stories like that that inspired me to buy a small UPS set up for my system, especially as I use a satelitte system to connect and I've been told that they tend to attract lightning.

Oh yeah, we've outfitted most everything with stuff like that now. We have one of those six outlet surge protector boxes with the coaxial cable input and outputs for the modem and router, Bob's PC's always had a UPS (which is what we think saved it from getting zapped through the switch), and now the TV area has it's own surge protector :3 They need another for their TV but that can come later, it'll probably be the same model as the one for the modem and router area. But when Bob and I get our own place you better believe there's going to be surge protectors out the wazoo xD I want to get the entire network on a UPS so we don't have to restart everything when the power dips :3

Well most of it seemed to give itself to stop the lightning from arcing to really important things, so it's all good :3

Ah, good to hear. So at least the important stuff is save. XD I like how optemistic you are. Most others would just whine around, but you just see the posetive aspect of all that. That is great.

Cheers
