The friend thing

by
I've gotten a few friend requests from people here I don't know or bearly know. I'm pretty sure others have said the same thing I'm about to, but here it goes. "Friending" here is merely sharing content that you consider private or only to be seen by people you know and trust.  It's not an "I wanna be yer friend" button in the sense that you want to get to know that person better. Also, it becomes rather useless if you just accept anybody's friend requests.

So, I'll be turning down 99% of these requests on the basis that I don't know you (yet).

I've gotten a few friend requests from people who weren't even watching me (never mind people I'd never heard of). And, I actually am using the friends-only function for stuff that shouldn't be posted publically... so, yeah, I heartlessly send those ones to the bit bucket in the sky.

It's also mandatorily reciprocal--if you accept someone's friend request, both of you can see the other's stuff. Some people seem to forget that or not understand it. :P

Hmm...that reminds me, I have a couple of people friended but not watched ^///^. Doh!
I haven't yet made anything friend-only either. Ah well..some time ^^;

Hmm...you know...Instead of a friends function it might be kinda nice to have groups instead. That is, only posts for a group would be visible to them..etc.  But maybe that's getting outta hand..

I never make requests for others, I just draw what they want... ^^
I love to see your arts, Looq! Wanna be friends? ^^

I really don't care much for the friend functionality that was added.  Sure, it's convenient for private sharing, but its kind of bad for the community as a whole.  Each submission that goes private is one less submission that the community gets to enjoy.  Having the function only makes it easier for people to not share with everyone.  I simply won't ever post something here, or on FA, that isn't meant for everyone to see.  People can request friendship with me all they want, and I'll gladly accept, but it won't get them anything extra.  I figure, if someone is watching me, that they like what they see.  Watching is a friendly gesture.  In return, I treat all watchers as friends and let them see whatever I might have.  Sure, there can be rare exceptions, such as trolls.  If someone watches for a non-friendly reason, and abuses the situation, I'd just silently put them in a block filter.  I assume all my watchers are good people, unless they convince me otherwise.  The friend system assumes watchers are somehow bad, unless they prove otherwise.  Maybe I'm too trusting, but just can't see why people would want to hide art from most of their watchers, who wouldn't be watching if they didn't like the art.

By the way, I love most of your art, even when some of it might involve fetishes I don't personally take part in. The reason is that you draw it so well.  For example, I'm not into scat, but when you drew a squirrel pushing out a log that was nearly as large as himself, I had to love that picture.  You always manage to get the expressions so right and turn the ordinary into something I can feel.  Yes, I could almost feel the squirrel's thoughts. When an artist can make someone feel their characters, they are good. You also manage to put a sense of enjoyment into most of your art.

One thing I've noticed as an artist that draws porn type things is that people who normally soically positive people suddenly get kind of defensive or aggressive with comments to adult art. I've seen all sorts of crazy reactions over the years. All this unfortunately has made me more cynical than I used to be. Most of that happened when I was on FA with around 1,000+ watchers. Now that it's cut down to 500 something, people seem to know what their in for when watching me. Oh plus there's that oh so wonderful filtering system for touchy people ^^. I think the filtering combined with the editing and blocking abilities really makes this place more comfortable and give the artists way more control instead of being at the mercy of "what gets put there stays there".

As for friending, wow, I..never thought about it quite that way before. I'd love to consider all my watchers well intentioned and resonable people until they prove otherwise. Hiding art away would be a defensive kind of action, assuming that whoever saw it would "know too much" or go apeshit crazy lol. Heh, if I upload something, I just consider it "on the net", not usually "in a super private restricted space where only select ppl can see".

This idea of it being bad for the community as a whole makes sense. Communication is what creates bonds between people, and art is communication. Withholding art from people basically would be saying that it can only do it's job with the people on your friends list. I've seen one or two of my pictures posted in on a forum in a thread meant to create some hostil mob against me. Trouble was, some people posted some art that showed the nonporn part of me and a couple of people piped up "I've felt like that too". It really made me smile seeing my art in places I never posted it, people still relating to it despite the intended climate of the place. I guess my main idea here is that people will pretty much go toward things they like and move away from things they don't naturally, no friending system needed.

^^ Hehe! And I'm glad you still enjoy my art despite it's "content". I've always had a thing for silly and humorous stuff, and loved cartoons quite a lot. I guess I like to think that they still wouldn't lose their charm even if they did get sexual, they'd still be playful and happy to try things, no matter how nuts :) It's very much a joy to go to that place.

I've had stuff of mine end up on SomethingAwful, EncyclopediaDramatica and PortalOfEvil, always without permission of course. Something like that makes some people want to leave the net, or hide in shame, as if they did something wrong. It's never wrong for people to like different or weird things, and to post them though.  It is wrong for people to take those things and re-post them without asking, often in inappropriate areas. I'm different than most though, and finding my stuff didn't bother me. I would never have uploaded something to any place on the net if I wasn't comfortable with people seeing it, and I have some fairly unusual and weird fetishes. I just pick appropriate places to share them, where others are likely to appreciate the same. Once in a while, someone doesn't like that I'm having fun and they aren't, so they go ballistic over something I shared. In almost all cases it would be something like a picture of a used plushie posted to an adult plushie site, where such material is on topic and expected, and also clearly labeled. Someone who is freaked out by the concept of plushie sex would join such a site for who knows what reason.  Then they would seek out the most extreme and uncommon stuff to go searching for. Then after looking at folders full of what they can't handle, they'd go on a rant about how bad it was.  I think their goal is to make people upset or feel bad about themselves, but it never works on me. I leave my stuff up, along with every bad comment if someone happens to make one.  They end up looking bad.  When I saw my pictures on EncyclopediaDramatica, I thanked them and asked if they'd like any more. It totally deflated their attempt to get laughs at my expense. They realized right away that their games didn't phase me.

The fact that you like the silly and the humorous make your art more fun. Trying new things is what makes life worth living.  You can express it in art, or apply it to real life fetish stuff, whatever.  New things often means stuff that is crazy and different to most people.  I highly doubt that you could draw a new or weird idea that I didn't think was interesting. Honestly, the content of your art never bothers me at all. It might involve some stuff I wouldn't personally do in real life, but I still enjoy pretending. I can easily shift my mind into toony mode and suddenly squirrel turds become toony chocolate logs with no bad smell. Once my mind made it toony and not real, it can get as weird, gross or funny as possible, and I'll be looking at it with wide open eyes.  If you happen the draw content that I enjoy in person in real life, then things get even better, because my imagination can merge what I see with real life.  Watersports is one such thing.  When that is drawn to fun or toony extremes, it can enhance the real thing in my mind. You have a good talent for adding cute to most critters, and that is something only a small percentage of artists do - either by choice, or by lack of ability.

You could use it that way if you wanted.

I personally use the friends functionality for basically two things:
1) Posting journals about matters that I'm comfortable sharing with a small, select group of friends, but not the public (like, a recent medical situation--and don't worry, I'm fine).
2) WIPs and such. 'Final' pieces get posted publically.

In other words, if you're not my "friend" you're not missing out on anything you'd want to see anyway. It's just a function--it's up to the user to decide how immature they want to be with it.

I sometimes like to see the WIP for people's art - usually the black and white line art, and then the final version.  But, it isn't usually important. :)

WIP for writing is a lot less interesting. :P

Now that is something that I imagine one would share with one or two friends, for proofreading and such, until a final version was ready.

Bingo. And this is why I use the friends system. Some people might use it for immature and unproductive reasons; I make effective use. :P

I just use it to filter people who aren't serious. If they never reply or they troll me, they soon find themselves ex-friends and banned from commenting on everything. This has only happened in, like, 2 cases though.

Like, I would never put something on the friends-only function that was THAT private. It's mostly just whiny bullshit journals that I expect casual fans would not be interested in, or the occasionally really REALLY piss-poor sketch. Like, so bad I'm only keeping a record of it for the lulz.

TL;DR: I use the friends-only option to post BAAAWW personal drama posts and to put up really shitty art. XD

I have to say I don't really "get" the friend thing here. I've accepted a few requests out of a why-not sort of feeling. But if I wanna converse with somebody, I think I'll get something more out of it through AIM or MSN.
Speaking of which, I put you on my buddy list on AIM, for what it's worth. :U
