"Tai's Story" - The aftermath and things to come.

Wow. It's fairly damn incredible to look over my "library" here and see that I've completed my first full-length novel.

I've been hovering around the fandom, with only incomplete novels and two-bit erotic short stories under my belt, for a shocking amount of time. Having been writing since I was about twelve years old, I've begun many "novels."

I have not finished as many as I would like; that's why this means so much to me. It's not driving me forth to get drunk and celebrate wildly - by myself, most likely, since my involvement in the local furry community is non-existent. It's a subtle satisfaction, though nigh overwhelming regardless.
Even though I can't claim it's over-and-done-with just yet: the compiled novel will still need to be edited one last time and formatted into a novel (just in case someone feels the desire to print it).

But for all intents and purposes, I have completed a novel of over 201,900 words. After years of delays, distractions and writing two other novels simultaneously... hell, I actually made pretty good time. Ahem.

At any rate. What's next, you ask?

Well, firstly I'll be doing that editing and formatting I just mentioned. After that, I've got my second story to finish up.

That would be Astray, a story that means rather a lot to me; if you haven't read it, but like anything else I've written, please give it a chance. You can find it here.

A sequel is queued up for Tai's Story. However, details are going to be kept secret for now. I have no intention of making it a crappy sequel, though it will be slightly different from the original. I don't intend to disappoint (then again, how many people plan on it?).

Considering making a document with supplemental, fun information about "TS", including information on a hypothetical soundtrack and some character bios. Basically just junk for "fans" (a word I still feel awkward using here). Can't give an estimated time to completion of it, because I'm not sure just how much detail I plan on writing for it.

I can't afford an artist to commission a front page or illustrations for Tai's Story, though I do admit it would be awesome to have them. Bugger.

Once again, thank you to everyone who helped me get through writing "TS" and get through my life as I did so. You're all awesome.

Every single comment means more to me than I can convey with mere words. In fact, the comments on the thirteenth chapter particularly are very hard to respond to individually.
All I can say is, thank you all. I'm honored and glad to have entertained you thus, and that you feel as great an attachment (almost!) to the characters as I do.

I hope to continue to do so in the future!

Awesome! I hope to read some pretty radical story telling from you in the future too. you're one of the best.

Thanks! My goal is to be THE best if possible, of course. >:3

Have you read all of Tai's Story yet? Curious to know what you think, since you've been reading for a heck of a long time.

Ah, actually I’m in the middle of Tai and Mike being rescued from the docks. (no spoilers plz! :D) It’s all really well done, except for a couple things that seemed out of place.

It was a miracle they could still walk, and Tai knew that. In fact, his legs took every opportunity to remind him how lucky he was that they( deigned )to cooperate.” the deigned (decided?)part seems a little off colored, and a couple other instances.

But, beyond that, this could be scripted into a movie with your captions explaing the little details. Sometimes I’ll imagine your story detailing parts on the bottom of a big screen, or being voiced by a highly paid professional.

Yeah, it was meant to be a wry comment, and I guess it does seem a bit like misplaced levity... and yeah it's "deigned."
Deign: descend do something that one considers to be below one's dignity.
... to condescend reluctantly and with a strong sense of the affront to one's superiority that is involved. : stoop <would not even deign to talk to him>. - Mirriam-Webster... one hell of a wordy dictionary apparently.

You're actually talking about something I just briefly discussed with an English professor... I'll have to explain elsewhere, but it's funny that you pointed out these narrative comments. Not the first to notice them, but coincidental timing. *blink*

As for spoilers, I will give thee none! But beware the comments, because a few of them DO spoil things. Also, if you find anything you think is awkward, let me know. I do have one last big edit-fest to do (the entire 202k word document... oh my god!) and it'd be appreciated if you told me if you think it's something I won't notice.

I couldn't even imagine typing out 200k words, much less the planning, organizing, and proof-reading of something that large. To be able to keep going when you are not sure how readers would react to this part, or how someone would imagine a scene in their head has to be a challenge. you have what your seeing and trying to achieve, and it may be completely different to what I'm seeing.

The sequel to TS shall be interesting, the end of 13 left it in a good spot for expansion that your could take many directions.

Havent read astray yet, might have to do that to pass the time one day this summer.

To be honest, writing is much harder and slower than it sounds. The bigger the project, the harder it gets exponentially. Since I was never on a deadline, and I had other projects (and school, family matters and other hobbies) to deal with, I took a little longer than I should have.

The hardest part is knowing that very, very few people are going to read it at all. Writers don't get a lot of respect in the furry fandom. If a writer is popular, he is being name-dropped by an artist, commissioning artists prolifically, or is also an artist. That deals a bigger blow to morale than anything else could, I have to admit.
I try to be very careful with my choice of wording and structure to make sure the reader is imagining things as closely as possible to how I envisaged them, but at the same time I want readers to have some freedom of imagination; getting the right balance at the right time can be a bit difficult.

Hopefully I won't disappoint with the sequel. Astray is one of my best stories ever, I feel, and I think you'll like it. It's not quite the same as TS... you'll see. See, and hopefully enjoy!

I'll try to get an artist to do a front cover. As it stands, very few artists have read anything I've done, and I can't pay them for any artwork. It won't be easy. =(

I'm glad you enjoyed the story! Thanks for always commenting. It means a lot. =3

Could you name a few publishing companies that are HQ'd in or work out of Australia?

Also... TS WAS/IS AWESOME!!!!  I wish that I could erase my memories of it so that I could read it again and get the full power of the emotions and feelings I got from reading it the first time.
And I can't wait to see what's happening in Astay.

Edit: You don't seem to like talking about SDY that much.  I just wonder why that is.

Not off the top of my head - or rather, the ones I can think of may be British publishing houses. Honestly, I don't think publishing anything here is a good idea at all.

I don't know how much information I can give you before somebody gets angry at me, but: there is a reason why Softpaw Magazine and its successor were based in America and never brought out here. See, our wonderful FREE nation of democracy and shrimps on barbies bans the crime of writing down sexual scenes featuring minors even in, say, a private diary you never intended to publish.
Yes, that's essentially a thought-crime. Yeah, nobody here complains. Few even know. Welcome to Australia.

In other words, it's murky enough that a dipshit religious judge could one day rule TS is illegal. Hence Softpaw Magazine not being sold here (to my knowledge).

I'm very glad people enjoyed Tai's Story so much. I've not responded to comments on chapter thirteen because I just don't know what to say; I'm speechless. This journal was meant to, in part, respond to those comments - I usually want to reply to every comment individually but I just don't know what to say. Maybe: thank you so much for reading and enjoying the story, and for encouraging and supporting its author. =3

SdY is on the back burner for a little while. I know I said I didn't want to discontinue it, but it's a large project with a surprisingly tiny readership. Still trying to decide what to do with it... in some ways I feel I've outgrown it.
