Alice The Madness Returns Review

K beat the game time for a review.

Graphics 5/5 They might not be the best in quality but they sure are great in design. I especially loved chapter 5.
Gameplay 2.5/5 The thing is the game is too easy. Once you realize you can spam dodge to evade most attack you will be spamming dodge. Also once you get the teapot cannon the game becomes really easy. The only problematic enemy is colossal ruin but it's easy if you just keep your distance and move in with vorpal blade when it's stunned. The 2nd thing is that there is a lot of platforming. I personally don't mind it but some might find it boring. But my main issue with the game that there is only ONE boss in the whole game. Rather disappointing.
Story 3/5 Well it's a nice sequel to the original but for the first 3 chapters the story won't make pretty much any sense. And then you see the plot twist in which I honestly did expected something like that.
Music 4/5 The music is not as awesome as in first one but it's still good. My main problem is chesire's new voice actor. The old one fit him way better.
Total 3.6/5
All in all the game is not that bad but there are few things that could have been done better. They should have worked a bit more on the combats, a bit more weapons and tried to implement more than one boss enemy.

Now for something more fun.

Glitches
1. Sometimes when you attack an enemy and quickly switch from hobby horse to vorpal blade it is possible for Alice to warp into enemy and just make it disappear.
2: Sometimes the air vents won't function properly and will just float you in one spot without raising you up.
3: Sometimes when you fall off a platform it won't register as a fall and it will make you fall endlessly and in the end it will kill you making you reset to the last checkpoint instead of last platform.
4: When you're shrunk it's possible to get stuck when going up the stairs and sometimes in small objects as well. I had to restart chapter 5 because I got stuck in that fall trough keyhole.

Random Tidbits
1: The place where you get the vorpal blade it's the skeleton of Jabberwock from Alice 1
2: The Mad Hatter has a voice actor. How awesome is that?
3: Lots of quotes from chesire during chapter 4 are the same as in Alice 1
4: The reaction of executioner when he realizes he's beep-ed is just priceless
5: During chapter 4 in a room with a memory you can see a skeleton with flying cap and some kind of psychic pose. That's a ref to Rasputin from the game Psychonauts. ( which is epic btw )
6: During chapter 5 you can see 3 blind mice on a shelf that look exactly like the mice from Shrek. But I wasn't really sure till I came to a enlarged version during the level and I can confirm that those look exactly like the blind mice from Shrek.
7: During radula room riddles chesire will ask you how are the Red Queen and a typhoon alike which is a ref to Alice 1. Hare asks you that when you get to him in Hatter's asylum.

I loved the game, at times it was very satisfying and the ending was very satisfying.
Graphic quality and design felt a bit inconsistent and dubious at times, although the mood was wonderful most of the time.
It wasn't easy to me, it was too hard (although using the max upgraded pot later on did get sort of easy), some battles killed me multiple times and made me redo large segments of platforming. Platforming was annoying and tedious at times and even luck-based
The camera was sometimes awful, a primary example being the giant card "executioner" chasing you while camera is in your face and you can't see the road before you, it was horrible.
The minigames were bad, insulting and boring, and sluggish to control, and kept breaking the mood (2d platforming, 2d shooters, logical puzzles like taken from some flash game, guitar hero/stepmania, riding down overly long slides trying to not fall off them, some sort of weird pinball mutation? chose the right number in a logical iq sequence of growing numbers? at times I was wondering what sort of game am I playing :/, thankfully most of those weren't obligatory)
The story was well done but rather cliche and I totally expected what will happen from the very beginning. The plot never managed to surprise me in any way. Also, the dialogs/script felt a bit forced and I felt it lacked the artistic quality consistency of Alice 1 (not always but often).
I liked the moody ambient music.

Even with all the problems, the game never frustrated me too much (while at the same posing a good amount of challenge) and was overall fun. I enjoyed the lovely insane nightmare and the ending was satisfying as well.
I would maybe give 4/5

Btw, the battles were still in a way very satisfying and made me feel very powerful while dodging and gradually destroying the swarms of giant enemies.
The graphic was beautiful and the mood great (even with the earlier mentioned inconsistency)

I see. I do agree on most of those. But I did like that last doll head pinball minigame.
The battles were really easy for me at start because I used the dlc outfit for double damage and weapons.
But I turned off those during halfway of chapter 1 and played with stock weapons. I managed to die only once and it was in that darkness where those shark can om nom nom you.

well in my defense, in the beginning I was playing on normal (I did everything with the default story-chosen clothes/weapons), and my pc is a bit too slow so I was getting some lag, and the keyboard controls of dodging and umbrella were very hard to work with until I changed them to some mouse buttons (but I did that later on) (game pad is probably easier to use in this game but I lack one)

I used the keyboard as well because it wouldn't recognize my gamepad. Then my friend showed me this x360ce emu which emulates a gamepad as a xbox360 controller. The only difference ( that I noticed lul ) was that I didn't have to switch between vorpal blade and hobby horse XD

I guess I'm just used to this kind of games. I did beat DMC 3 and 4 on Dante Must Die XD

I generally don't play 3d platformers, only played a few in my life, I remember the first Alice played more like an fps sort of game.
Well at least that's how I remember it.

Yeah it did. I know. Coz I beat it first. Coz it came with Alice 2 XD

Also if you really liked Madness Returns you should try to get Psychonauts if you can. That game is really great as well.

I checked it out but I hate the graphic design and the music/sound, and even characters overall. O: And it doesn't look all that similar at all, maybe very slightly in some very limited ways.

Oh? Well they are in my opinion. Well not in the start. But later. The game gets quite crazy.
But at least now you know that skeleton in chapter 4 from what game it is XD

Still, I'm sorry to say the graphic, music, and the characters are too much of a turnoff for me.

It's ok. I understand. I personally find Zelda Twilight Princess a turnoff even though everybody likes it XD

Because of net limit.
