Top tips for learning German from scratch

We have gathered tips from polyglots, teachers and linguists. They will help you build the right learning system and warn you against the mistakes you most often make when trying to learn German on your own.

1. Find your motivation

Motivation is the main driving force behind your learning process. You need to understand its importance clearly. Determine what value knowledge of German has for you personally, assess the potential benefits. Find a strong motivation that will become a success factor.

2. Set goals and develop a programme.

If you're learning German on your own, you need to use the following model German syllabus (you can find it on the Internet) and adapt it to your own requirements. When adapting, pay particular attention to the pace of learning - start at a slow pace and speed up gradually until you feel you have reached your limit.

3. Exercise regularly

Internal discipline is particularly important. Especially in situations where you don't have the teacher's control. Make a study schedule and stick to it - don't skip classes without a good reason. Remember that even a single absence can lead to a breach of internal discipline and to a reduction in the effectiveness of learning.

4. Learn grammar and vocabulary selectively

In fact, you only need to know around 40% of the grammar rules and around 30-35% of the words in modern German. Select words and phrases that you find useful for your work and for everyday communication. It's the same with the grammar: don't try to learn all rules, knowing and applying the basic ones is enough.

5. Use associations

Try to associate the words you're learning with their Russian counterparts: that's easier to remember. For example, mantel is similar to manty, but translated as coat, this association is not too useful when you feel hungry, but you will definitely remember the word.

6. Variety in the learning resources

Don't limit yourself to lessons and courses - watch German films with subtitles, translate song lyrics, find convenient sources of vocabulary.
